skinning and parenting

is there any tutorials on skinning and hierachy of joints and IK handles?

i have problem understanding the weight of the joints and how to use paint smooth skin tool to adjust the weight and deformation of joints

is component editor a easier tool?

i am trying to get a human leg that bends and moves back and forth without distortion of skin

I don't think the component editor is a very intuitive tool to do skin weighting. However you might come across situation were you have to use it.

tutorials, hmm have you done a google search? always a good idea you know...
might find somethung here

if the model of your leg only has one subdivision of vertices at the knee, that's why you're not getting any deformation. add some more edge loops to any bending parts (elbows, wrists, knees, etc.) before you bind.
