Linux and Maya

Hello again,

After running into a few annoyances with Maya on Windows XP i'm thinking of putting linux on a separate partition just for maya use. What type of Linux is Maya compatable with? I've only ever used Suse or Knoppix, has anyone got it running on either of those?

i know it works fine on many flavors...I used redhat without any problems at all. Check alias' site for the version of redhat maya 7 will work with...the latest redhat might not work...might need an earlier one.
I used redhat 7.3 with back with maya 5.0...but went back to windows mainly for photoshop and zbrush...but linux was awesome....Im thinking of goin back or just popping in an extra hard drive and partitioning it to use with Shake (not on windows...sigh, this never ends)

Thanks for your reply!

I've just about had it with windows and it's unreliability. I'll give linux a try. By the way, does anyone know out of Linux and Mac OS which would be better for running maya?

All the best

with linux you'll need to do a little tweeking to get everything working the way your used to in windows (its all in the maya docs though)..when u install linux for example redhat, you have to choose which GUI your going to use, the basic ones are KDE and Gnome. You can even install both and decide which one you like better, maya will be installed on both dont worry...its just at the login screen you just select which one you want to login to. Basically with linux you have a TON of flexibility...any tweeking you can think of is possible. With mac (like windows) its pretty much install it and run it...nothing more...many people say that mac is much more stable, but with the power most new pcs are getting today the line is pretty invisible.
Also, you might want to wait until 2006 to get a mac....they're going to releasing there first intel based OS...which could mean you'll be able to partition with windows.
