UV mapping basics video tutorial for beginners
Ive made a UV mapping video tutorial for beginners
its designed to give a basic and fast (only 5 mins!) overview of what UV mappings about. Its my first ever video tutorial so its a bit rough and ready..... It doesn't help that I cant pronounce the letter "v" http://elephantanimations.110mb.com/uvmapping.html |
umm... for me, your method seems like a kinda long winded way of doing this. also you didn't unfold the the shells. You should also check how the UVs look with a checker image.
|
Yeah I would have done a bit of adjustment to the UV's as thats what UV mapping is all about really, and then check for any distortion.
Also theres no actual description of what a UV is, you said we lay out UV's in strips and then select faces, if your a beginner its a tad confusing. Do you like using select by center of the face? |
to be honest i just plain forgot about the whole checking it with a checkered texture (I realised at about 11 this morning)
"Do you like using select by center of the face?" What do you mean? if your referring too the fact that i didn't right-click on the shader and select the faces that way its because my 3 button mouse is broken... Thanks for watching BTW I think ill will re-record it (or at least parts of it) to make it easier to follow and to include things i forgot.... ( Ill probably do that on friday, i might not have time tonight, if i do it tonight id have to rush it) Its really surprising how long it takes to do a 5 minute tutorial.... |

If your going to re-do it then a bit of a description of the differing methods would be good (planar, spherical etc etc) as their usage depends on the object, worth pointing out.
|
will do
I didnt know you could have select by center off.... thinking about it it would be a lot better to have it off...... heres a list of things i need to change, let me know if ive missed anything- 1) include checking with a checked texture (i cant believe i forgot that) 2) Include info about spherical mapping etc.. (i had that originally but messed it up and forgot about it when re-filming) 3) include what uvs are for etc |

i didn't even know you could turn it on! i always wondered what the dot in the middle of the faces were.... and now i know... it's something to annoy the hell out of me when selecting faces :p
if it was on by default then i probably turned it off without knowing it :p also, use the paint select tool instead of selecting all the faces one by one. i dont know why people don't use that... it's a lot easier than selecting components click by click |

Just drag and select, the easiest way. The paint tool, you need to activate it to start with so that might be why??... for a little selection like that I would just drag. Though I use the paint selection tool lot when I've got a complex model that i'm laying out. |
because drag and select selects everything in the marquee?
although, you're right, the model is simple, so marquee selection works faster. |
how about unfolding the UVs rather than just randomly re-scaling them.
|
anyway ive finished remaking parts of it but haven't had chance to upload it yet
I originally planed to remake the whole thing but i just couldn't get it right |

heres the update Its a bit slap dash i know but for the amount of people that are likely to see it it doesnt really matter |
half way you stopped recording right? :p
nice work man |
