Decent laptop

as you may know im thinking about getting a mac.
however i need to seem what i can get for the same amount of cash in a pc

Can anyone reccomend a laptop with a 512mb (or more!) graphics card, capble of hardware rendering and the like, preferably with a bluray drive

alot of people have recomended the dell xps but i cant find one for a decent price with a 512mb Graphics card

Dell XPS line up, or the precision series, they have quadros, or look at eveshams or ASUS (they make the macbooks)

You wont really need a card over 256 tbh unless you want monster textures.

what do you mean by "decent Price?" Cheaper than a macbook?

elephantinc 07-05-2008 07:18 PM

yeah, anything cheaper than a mac book, other wise ill probably get a macbook

gster123 07-05-2008 07:52 PM

Well, it all depends on whay you want for your money.

For example the XPS 1530, with the same processor as the macbook pro 15" standard, then it comes out at about £999 (a lot cheaper than the macs £1299, AND you get more RAM (for £30 more you can up it to 4gig, mac costs an extra £120 to get it to 4 gig), much larger HDD, and a blue ray drive, BUT its got a lower screen resolution

If your after a larger on 17" then the Macbook costs £1799, the XPS M1730 with the same processor and a larger HDD (the choice is 200GB or 320 so went with 320 as its the closest to the Macs 250 gig) BUT the graphics had 256meg compared to 512 on the mac but with a larger screen res than the mac comes out at £1570 (you could always lower the HDD and the porcessor speed and add a blue ray drive for a similar price).

If you wanted to get as close to the MAC's price with the Dell XPS M1730, you can get one with the same 2.5gig processor, 4 gig Ram, 320 gig HDD, DUAL GeForce® 8800GTX 512 meg cards for £1750 compared to the single card, 2gig, 250gig macbook.

So on the basis of the Dell range its cheaper, and withthe case of the 17" models you get more if you push the Dell up to the Macbook proce range.

Have a look at other manufacturers sites to fit your needs.

gster123 08-05-2008 03:04 AM

You said you wanted more than 512 in your post!!

You dont really need more than 256 tbh (ive got 512 but I doubt I ever use it)

Have a look at alienware and rock as well as HP

elephantinc 08-05-2008 02:55 PM

thanks for the help

One thing I have learned after switching to Mac, is that the money you spend extra on a mac is well worth in time you use to reinstall windows XP. Also the resell value of a PC is equal to zero while you get like 50% of the new price for a mac, especially the laptops.

Theres a bit of a rumble about apple dropping power PC support with the next version of OSX, dont know how true it is, and dont know if you would want to spend the extra cash on the new OS what with the adobe problems on CS2, worth thinking about.

Also I cant really see the point of getting a mac (an old one) and a PC thats not the spec your after....

Funnily enough I was using a mac this weekend.

NO, do not go with a G4. If you're going to get an older Mac, the least you want to get is a G5.

elephantinc 11-05-2008 07:49 PM

why G5?
i havent been able to find any G5's (UK)

I'm just saying, if you're going to go for an old Mac, don't go with a G4.
