Feb-March challenge: Virtual Cityscape

Virtual Cityscape

I've been playing Sim City 4 lately (after being completely disapointed with Sim City Societies) and thought that maybe it'd make an interesting theme for a challenge.

So, thinking along those lines, how about an environment challenge? Build a city! Haha, just kidding. But how about building an interesting building? Or a huge suspension bridge over water? Or a Ferry Terminal with a great big commuter ferry pulling into dock?

Or maybe go simpler. A bus stop? A peaceful city park? A water tower?

Check out some of these Sim City 4 screenshots to get your motor running:

A couple guides:

1) It doesn't have to be pretty. Feel free to do a slum lord's crappy apartment building. :)

2) Modeling and Texturing are required.

3) You can be super-duper-high-res or do low-poly game models... your choice!

4) Name your threads something like Virtual Cityscape Challenge: Baseball Field (challenge name: your entry title)

Feel free to ask any questions in this thread. No prizes I'm afraid... But you'll get a nifty medal for getting 1st, 2nd, or 3rd! We can even go crazy with categories if you guys want: Most Creative, Most Realistic, etc. Depends on if we get enough entries, though, I imagine.

UPDATE:

Just thought of a cool idea. If we get enough people, we can put all the entries together in one render and have our own little SM city. :) If enough finish, I'll take care of it!

Deadline Noon April 1st (USA Pacific Time)! No, it's not a joke. :)

you've been playing a lot of sim city 4 also huh? Thought I was the only one obsessed with it recently. Good idea for a challenge I might join in on this one

oh and is your deadline a joke or is it really on april fools day? haha, had to ask.

Mike, can it be photo real or does it have to look like Sim City graphics?

I would guess it's up to you from what rule 3 is

"3) You can be super-duper-high-res or do low-poly game models... your choice!"

I wasn't under the impression that hi-res meant photo real. I have seen low res look photo real when textured and rendered properly.

you can have eleventy-billion polys if you want. Although I wouldn't recommend it.

Sim City 4 graphics, by the way, are a combination of sprites and 3D models. All of the buildings and citizens are sprites while all the vehicles are low poly 3D models.

honestdom 31-01-2009 08:51 AM

only sim city 4 style graphics!?

....ok, i quit. :(

mtmckinley 31-01-2009 09:47 AM

uh, no... do whatever you want. Doesn't have to be like Sim City at all. I was just adding to the conversation.

honestdom 31-01-2009 10:15 AM

ah, sorry about that... i'm in again

Hiraghm 03-02-2009 05:52 AM

Can you make a collection of buildings as an evironment? Like a village, or a shopping center?

03-02-2009 07:17 AM

deadline april 1st? a little long, no?

either way, im in if i can get some free time:ninja:
