Dark spots on Polys after alterations

1 Attachment(s)
Hi everybody. Every once in a while during modeling, I'll do something (it varies) to one of my polys and it gets dark spots on it. Check out the pic to see what I mean. Am I doing something wrong or is there some way to fix/prevent this from happening?
Thanks!!a

You might want to check the normals of the faces which are causing the spots. There is a command under the Display menu (can't check the exact name right now) to show the normals of the selected objects.

It might be the normals, or just how the vertices in that area are sitting at the moment. Check like KB said the normals are all facing the right way and to see if all the border edges are merged. You can also go edit polygons go down to normals, in the little window that pops up go to soften/harden option box, click on all soft and than apply. This should align the vertices that might be causing the color changes to give you a flater look.
