EXTRUDING EDGE ALONG A PATH

Hi. I am trying to extrude a polygon edge along a curve path. The curve is snapped to the edge, but when I hit extrude maya is extruding along the curve but turning the edge by ninety degrees. Any tips on how to stop this happening? (p.s. twist is not on in the options).
