Animation Timeline

I am currently working on the animation tutorial included in the Maya demo download.
Somehow I screwed it up and now Both the end time and the Frames per second are locked together... for instance I want 24 frames per second and 72 frames (for 3 seconds) but when I change either number the other number changes to the exact same number.
I went into preferences and it reflects 24 fps and 72 total frames but in the timeline it reflects either 24 fps and 24 total frames or 72 of each...
What the heck did I do???

are you sure you're changing the FPS in the timeline? The two number boxes on the left and right of the time line represent min/max frames and specify what range of frames are displayed in the timeline.

So, for example, if you have 500 max frames, and you tell it to display all 500 frames, but then change the number of max frames to, say, 100, then the max display number will also change to reflect that it no longer has 500 frames to display... just the 100 you changed it to.
