Scarlet Johanson portrait
Just finished this 3 week project of Scarlet Johanson. Did some major topology changes to the lower body. She was too skinny in the reference. Skin tones were a real pain in the butt. I went my own way with them. Eye, hair, and lip color are different from the reference also.
I also almost decided to paint her without the green shorts. though I still might do it in the future to see if I can do it. This project turned out looking alot better than the reference. She looks alot sexier now IMO. let me know that you think. |
That is a stunning picture! The detail and pose and face and everything just works perfectly
Out of interest, do you ever sell these? Also on a more seedy note: Yes... yes you should do it without the green shorts :bandit: |
great job, the photo realism is good in all of the works you have posted and this is really good. keep up the great work
|
Cheers Some Guy! Thank you for the fantastic comment. As for selling, I haven't sold any. I'm not sure people would have enough interest in my work to buy. Guess I would have to go out and make a name for my self before anybody would consider. I really want to concentrate on building my portfolio before I'm ready to sell anything.

Cheers Rhetoric Camel! I try to improve on the photo realism with every new project. I'm really glad to know you enjoy my progress!

that hair is amazing
and.. those green things are shorts? i thought it was an oversized belt... it's really awesome is it me or do the eyes look like they are pointing in different directions from each other? |
Loving your work as always THX, it makes me almost want to put learning maya on hold and get back to some hand drawing in Photoshop,almost... The only thing I will say in the form of a crit is what Chirone said, her eyes do seem to be slightly off, she almost looks like she could be possessed! But apart from that top notch as ever! You really need to get your portfolio done and get selling, you're more than there already! Keep it up mate!

Cheers Chirone and Dango77! Your C&C are always valued. About the eye's, it could be the dark shadow on the left one thats causing her eyes to look wacked. LOL, I don't how eyes came to be my biggest problem. The next one I do I'm going to spend alot more time on the eyes.
Here is a larger rez shot of her head. Could you go over them again and give me a second take. They are still unaltered. As for selling my work, I still want to build on my portfillio a bit more. I want to include structure projects and animal life. I don't want to just stay with portraits. Thanks again for the kind words! |
is this based on a real photo? whats your work flow?
|
Kurt, you can see the photo reference if you google image her name
it was the first photo for me, might or might not be different for you even in the close up it still looks a little off, it might be the shadow, but i don't think so sorry to graffiti on awesome work but i took a screen shot and shifted the eye over and raised her eye lid up a bit at the bottom by cloning... yeah it's a little crude but i thought it looked slightly better, although it's not in the same position as the reference it's hard to say what it is that's throwing it off but it might be her right part of her left eye is too open? but then... i just pop her picture ontop of yours (and it matches up perfectly...) and now it's too hard for me to tell that there's something wrong with it...... the lower eyelid of her right eye (i don't know body parts) could be raised up a bit more |

My work flow.... #1. Sketch #2. Shade and detailing #3. Color ( done with masks ) #4. Final detailing Chirone: It could be that the painting is showing anatomy errors of the real person, or the shading is off by so little that it's creating the illusion of an anatomy error. I did the same thing you did by popping the real reference over the sketch and it matched up, except for one thing. The pupils were bigger in sketch. I might consider an over paint from the reference, but switching back and forth from sketch to reference is a real pain in the butt, and most likely wont fix the problem. The painting is still alot different from the reference in many ways. Thanks for the help on the problem Chirone! |
I have that pic as a poster on my wall - fantastic job there - well done
|
Cheers tweetytunes, thank you for the kind words!
