Koda, my girlfriend's puppy

my girlfriend recently got a cute chocolate lab named koda, so what a perfect way to learn subD modelling! I had a lot of trouble with his front leg cause I tend to over do it with the details in the polygon stages...

next phase of my learning curve is texturing...ugh. What doyou think? should I do fur or fake it with textures somehow?

great start!!! The paws need a bit more work but your well on your way=)

IMO fur is the way to go- it is still relatively quick rendering and looks so much more real than any texture ever can be. Really nice modelling, but I agree with kurt- the paws could stand some "smoothing" (in this case not acheived by adding polys but by making less of them, the result being a smoother subD surface)

Nice work!

I like it!! Yea, the paws a little but I really like it.

Fur! Fur! Fur!

Very cute! Good job.

I am sure you just earned major browny points with her. Haha, nice work.

Thanks. The paws do need alot of work but I'm sooo eager to get him animated!! It seems there's never an end to the tweaking. I will reduce the polygons, split the toes more and add more volume to the du claw.

(and yes RickStefani, Browny points to the max).

koda with textures

After a whole night of testing out my new wacom and maya's 3d paint tool...koda's textures are done I think. He's probably all pink underneith but this will help with his fur. Still debating on using maya fur or a whole bunch of nurbs fur clumps. Maya fur takes soooo long to render that I might have to do it the classical way...

i love it, he's real cute. i like that the paws and everything are modelled.

1 quick question if you don't mind - how did you go about making the ears? is it edge extruded or what?

thanks!

rhaoosh 25-11-2003 10:46 PM

I found a good looking quad near where his ear should be and extruded that a few times. then I split it length wise a couple more times and reshaped it with free from deformation tool.

I might fix the base of the ears since quote from my girlfriend "he looks like dumbo".

dave_baer 25-11-2003 11:34 PM

He rhaoosh, nice pup! Kinda reminds me of that little pup in Cats vs. Dogs.

"No, it is you baby puppy, who are in trouble..." LOL! I loved it when that cat said that.

Anyway... Looks really nice, but he doesnt look "furry". Maybe it's just the texture? Do you have hairs painted in there or are you having problems with blurred textures?

if you animate him, make sure you post vids! :D

The textureing looks wonderfull !! great job. Speeking of the clasical way.. I'm gessing your talking about nurbs with transparentsy and hairtexutes maped to them ? Do you know a solve for the problem of no thickness when viewed at right angles ?

rhaoosh 25-11-2003 11:48 PM

Thanks.

dave: yeah, I haven't done the fur yet..tried maya fur and it didn't work out cause I was too lazy to unwrap uv's...

Pony: yeah, I'm thinking instead of planar nurbs strip, I'm gonna use little flattened 3d cone type shapes and texture them with transparency. that might achieve some thickness from all angles.
