Hah, I had the same problem for so long, and I still haven't found out, so I just make a poly plane with my reference textured on it.

I have the same problem too! How do you rid it? Its probobly best to just make a poly plane like Blinn said... You can have more options with it...

get the name of ur image plane and delete it from ur hypergraph :)
i wud never use image planes cos theyre so slow, just do what blinn sed, use a lambert shader

go to the image plane attributes and select NONE in the RGBA (sorry i dont remember what was the name of that combo box)
column.
That should do it. or remove the source file of the image file .. that will do too

I agree, better use nurbs planes.

Select your camera, then in Hypershade click on View Upstream and Downstream Connections, then delete the image plane :)
