Sea Creature Tutorial

I was wondering if there is any tutorial or something I can follow to get an idea how to do the underwater scene that Kurt used for this tutorial. I would like to make something sort of like this for my own underwater creature that I made, just to get a feel for how it looks. Any lighting or anything else that might need to be done to achieve a look similar, I'm not looking to copy.

If i remeber right i added a plane in front of him with a bit of transparency and color then added most of the water light in photoshop using layers.
