does anyone know how to change the default maya material permanently?

why would you want to do that when you can just attach a new material and adjust it as you like?

well, mayas default lambert is horrbible at displaying models, and i always change my material after modeling if at all. i just think having a different material would be better when beginning a model. and its a bit too much trouble making the same material everytime i open maya

you can export/import materials

how do you export materials?

i think it's under the file menu of the hypershade - not sure how this will help with your question though...

if you make a material you want to use often, export it and import it whenever you want.
