:::TEXTURING PROBLEM :::

Hi folks.

I finally (after 7 weeks - NO sh*t!!) got my books i ordered at amazon.
Started with Learning Maya Foundation.
In lesson 2 (everything went ok till there) the topic to texture gets IMHO a lil' sloppy. Anyhow, theing is that some boxes need to be textured. Texture is provided.

My problem is that when the value's for U and V don't seem to be correct. I mean, in the book what I see is a blue "grid" of 3 lines of black stripes, with 2 rows. In my scene the box is totally blue with 1 small piece of stripe.
Is this a settings problem? I think maybe the inch - cm switch?

Thx 4 the help.

is the reference from my work.

Notice the difference on the shaded box.
I inverted the 2 colors, but that is not the problem...

can you show a screen grab of the UV editor for the box?

hi cut_the_krab - i don't think it's a settings problem - you just need to alter the attributes of the texture. Once you have the grid applied to your shader, click on the grid node to open the attribute editor. Then you can assign a color - click on the color and filler color swatches. To get the same pattern, just adjust the u and v widths, again in the attribute editor. To fix it's positioning, just click on the place2dTexture node in the the hypershade and adjust the repeat u and V attributes. I've worked through the same tutorial, so I know it definitely works.

The attributes of the texture huh?
This is what i get when I follow the book.

or this one?!

As you can see it's the same problem with all the boxes, no matter what texture is applied.
Maybe it has something to do with the (pixel)size of the images?

i have to agree with arran... since i can't see your exact values for your grid texture, i can't SUPER accurately reproduce it, but i can create the same 'floating bars' that you've got... i think your u width and v width values are too high. if you go back to the default settings of .200 and .200 you can start over, and if you're not getting the shapes you want in your grid texture, the answer shouldn't lie in changing the u and v values, but instead should be found in changing the repeat UV settings found in the place2dTexture node.

edit:

books aren't infallible, so if that's what you get by following the book but it doesn't look correct, they either forgot to mention a setting you're supposed to change, or you missed something.

cut_the_krab 15-09-2006 06:21 AM

I made 2 posts
1 with the uv values and 1 with repeat UV's
The book states
U: 0,3
V: 0,9

repeat
U 2
V 3

I did that, like in the pics
The default values are not 0.220 but 1.000

I also messed around with like all the settings, but it seems to be something fundamental.
Am i missing something else?

voila

NeoStrider 15-09-2006 08:09 AM

hmm. well after creating a poly cube and entering in the values you so kindly provided from the book, i get the same results as they do... *shrug*

did you try the inch-cm switch?

cut_the_krab 15-09-2006 10:17 AM

Actually I didn't.
But I made a new poly cube and a new Lambert with a 2d grid, mmb dragged it onto the Lambert -> chose color attach, and entered the values as described.
Still no similar effect. Maybe it's a version 8 bug?
If not i'm outta options.

Anyone?

Strange enough the other elements in the same exercise are working, like the galaxy, pedestal, room, pillars, cable (for those familiar with the project).

If anyone finds a good possible solution, let me know.

I'll be continuing without the boxes I guess.

Yooo.

that's wierd - I am comparing mine to yours and I can't see a difference. I would have thought it would have something to do with the place2dTexture node. Maybe it is something to do with version 8.

There are definitely mistakes in the book later on, but as I said I didn't have a problem at that point.

Don't lose the boxes - you need them later on. I would just apply another wood texture and move on for now so you don't go crazy. :)

I quickly slapped the things into one in Maya 6.0

Is that more like what it's supposed to look like?
