Photoshop help, copying many layers to create alpha?

Hi,

posted this already in a couple of photoshop forums without luck... thought I'd give it a shot here; here's the post:

Hi all,

I'm texturing an item I've made in maya. I have a lot of layers containing text, and I want to copy them all (they're already white) and just paste them into the alpha channel.

But, I can't. I've linked the layers, and tried ctrl selecting each layer and pasting, but photoshop is just pasting one of them down, and right in the middle, not in it's original location.

I'm sure this must be very easy, and most things I can figure out after a bit (or after googling) but I'm stuck on this one.

If anyone can help that'd be great.

cheers,

gubar

thanks,

gubar

have you rasterized the text?

Hi,

no I haven't - is that required?

I'll have a look into it just now.

thanks,

gubar

OK,

just rasterized it all... still, when I select all the layers and try to copy, I can only select "copy merged", then when I go to the alpha layer, I can't paste.

I'm sure this should be easy but I'm pretty stuck. If you know anything more, let me know.

thanks,

gubar

EDIT: even if I select the layers one by one and copy, it is pasting it down directly in the centre rather than where it should be. weird.

If I flatten all the layers, I can copy and paste them fine, but I want to keep them seperate in case they need to be edited later.

Hey. Your going about it all wrong. Make a selection of all your lettering. Select the channel editor. At the bottom there is a button "save selection as channel" its a grey box with white circle in it. Your done. Now save as 32 bit targa for best alpha channel results.
