Recommended output for 3d for print

I have to admit I am stumped on why my pics are coming out kind of grainy. The resolution is set at 300 dpi when I output the JPEG. What does anyone recommend for output show I can scale up and down comfortably without losing printing quality. I was taught 300 but apparently that is not working. I have not done any graphic design work in two years so I forget how to convert inches into a proper pixel size. I have three scenes I need printed at hi-res at 8.5 x 11. What would the pixel count in maya be for that output.

I went in photoshop and typed in the dimensions and it gave me 2550 x 3300 pixels at 300 resolution for 8.5 x 11.

Never mind I found the settings for inchs in the render global. My pics are coming out okay, sorry to bother anybody.
