network render

I'm assuming I can network render from MentalRay using my Mac as the host and network PC's but can you also network render using software render? I've never networked Mental Ray so I have no experience but it sure would be nice to do it in software also. What is the difference in Mental Ray compared to software or RayTrace render?... It seems faster in software render.
