hey guys, what s/w should i use to add subtitles to my animation?

preferably free.. :p but u cant al so suggest those that have to be purchased

You need a compositing or editing program, like After Effects, Final Cut Pro, or Adobe Premiere. If you have a Mac you can use iMovie.

Most editing programs have a subtitle feature, the compositing ones sometime don't, but you can import a layer with text on it made in Photoshop, etc and layer it over your animation.

If your running Windows XP you can also use Movie Maker which is located in Program Files if you havent got it in the list. But not too sure if it does subtitles but it should.

A program I would suggest even though it must be purchased is Macromedia studios, it is a toned down Photoshop used for creating flash animations, but it allows most movie files to be imported into it, allowing for subtitles and frame-by-frame Photoshop quality edits.
