Going back ten years ago...

The fastest computer for 3D graphics was an Onyx2 from Silicon Graphics... depending on the configuration, it was either as large as a minibar fridge, a large fridge or around a quarter of a tennis court.

Maya came out in 1998 and replaced PowerAnimator (did I get the name right?), running on Silicon Graphics hardware of course, which cost around $20,000.

Google was still headquartered in a garage, not in Silicon Graphics' place (SGI later lost lots of money and sold their headquarters to Google).

I STILL have my license & my dongle here on my desk:) ah memories... The cool thing was in 99' SGI released a Windows NT box branded from SGI, and it was in the trailer for South Park the movie, as SGI was a major sponsor of that movie, as well as many others around 98-99 including Lost in Space in 98, etc...

Lost in Space, I remember seeing that movie. The ironic thing is that in the movie, set for 2050, the funding for spaceship that goes to other planets is provided by SGI, but 8 or so years after the movie is released, SGI applies for Chapter 6 bankruptcy protection... :p


What else happened in 1998? The 400 MHz Pentium II was "the" chip for gaming...

Having 512 MB of RAM (133 MHz single data rate back then) was like... wow!

People still used CRT monitors...

And Windows 98 came out! I remember that unstable 16/32-bit hybrid OS... I still have a magazine from 1998 that had a feature story about Windows 98. The guy was talking about how "modern" it looked, with its revamped boot splash screen. :)

found out yesterday i have to apply for a chapter 6 too.., i backed into a parked car (raining) a couple of weeks ago .., reported myself then.., (ethics are difficult!!) .., and went to a financial advisor yesterday.., he said.., for a student.., its all i can do.., so i empathise with SGI :) (bankruptcy)

10 years ago i was making jewerlly overlooking the rice fields (now gone) in Ubud (Bali) .., ten i tried to do 'the right thing'., studying my ar...se off for the last 5 years and look where i am now.., a dingy student housing, and more pressure than a kolacanbare.

I was 24 then, and was about 5 years in the theater business operating 35mm film projectors. I was also running windows 95 at the time. Wasn't AOL the leading ISP provider in 98?

i just read this morning that google is actually trying to kill microsoft by making the OS obsolete because of Chrome
