How do you bake GI and Caustics and/or render them in a layer?

Hi,

I am in need of help as my Core 2 Duo with 4 gigs of RAM but XP reads
3.5 of it. Anyway, I am trying to render a 4000 pixel wide image at
300 dpi.

But everytime, I clicked on the Render button my desktop will crash.
I already bump up the Virtual Memory to 4096 for min and max.

My scene has lots of skin shaders, 1 2-sided shader, mia material and
some subsurface scattering with a Phong.
1 Area Light and render with Caustics and Global Illumination.

I have searched everywhere, but I couldn't find any tutorials on
baking Global Illumination nor putting that in a render layer.

What is the best way to render the scene without crashing and faster?
If possible, can you give me a step by step instructions on baking
Global Illumination and baking caustics? Or put them in a render
layer?

I tried to render a smaller file, but the largest I can render without
crashing was 2000 pixel wide at 300 dpi and it took my desktop 2 days!
Please help!

My AIM screenname is "tvholicjames"

Thank you.

Are you rendering in layers or trying to do the whole thing in one pass?

I am trying to render in layers, for faster render output.

So is it possible?

What about rendering Final Gather in a render layer?

Thanks.

Thanks, like the strawberries.

what is the actual res, as I have had problems in the past which was due to using odd ratios which for some reason MR didn't like. 4000 wide should be fine but what's the height?

What version of maya are you running?

Hi,

Well for my CheesePlatter, I wanted to render at 720 by 405 for my reel which contains Caustics and Global Illumination.
I tried the Digital Tutors tutorial on batch baking, but they didn't make a tutorial on baking GI and I assumed it is not possible, I tried batch baking GI, but it kept telling me that my lightmaps are missing. I have checked the lightmaps, they are all intact. I don't know why Autodesk have this Batch bake options for GI when no one else can get it to work.

And for my Fruit tarts, I wanted to render at 720 by 405 for my reel as well with faster render time which was why I had the most problems with baking the Final Gather layer, I even ran it with an animated camera, but it still flicker.

I am using Maya 8.5 at the moment.

My AIM screenname is "tvholicjames" by the way.

If you have any suggestions about batch baking to make it render alot faster instead of an hour a frame with GI and caustic, please let me know. I would love to learn more correct techniques.

Thank you very much.
