use booleans ;)

i cant position it in place, as its on like a sphear type, speaking of eggs, anyone know how to make a realistic egg texture in maya?

RockyMills_01 28-10-2007 05:31 AM

you can find eggshell textures in google

nexusfire 28-10-2007 10:25 AM

well i still cant position it propperly so so do i do it
?

If you modeled the egg using polygons, you could simply use the split polygon tool to slice the geometry to create the cracked hole and just delete those faces.

it wont work..

Can you attach some pics/mb file so we can see what's the problem?

what dont you understand ^^? its a sphear, and i want to cut a hole in the side, but because its around i cant position it :(

Are you looking for the geometry to have the hole or do you want a texture of a hole to be applied to the geometry?

The pic I attached show the geometry with an actual hole in it.

NO!

Word to the wise! NEVER! EVER! EVER! use booleans! Stay away from them!

Start with the egg. Erase various faces by switching to Face mode. Delete a good part of them by selecting them and hitting delete. Switch to vertex mode and shape the vertices into the shape that you want by selecting them and using the move tool to move them around. Easy!

If you want to get a thickness of the egg form inside the hole. Switch to Edge mode. Select the edges that make the hole. Got to: Edit polygons>Extrude edge. This will extrude edges from the edges that you selected. Switch to the move tool and move the new edges inward inside the hole.

What is your reason why?
I use booleans often. Once I delete the history on the geometry. Everything should be fine.

well...

It's not a sure fire way to model. True you can erase the history, but if you look at the hypergraph and graph the inputs and outputs of the object you will see that Maya still considers it a boolean object and it keeps the info. This causes a whole lot of trouble when you want to rigg something and animate it. It's kinda like painted rust. It's looks good on the outside and gets the job done but underneath it's just a big ol' mess. My teacher's gave me a hard time about this when I first started using maya. It's not professional. Just trying to pass on some good advice.

well, thanks for the heads up.
