Retopology > tutorials and alternatives

Hi
TOTAL Maya novice.

Have high poly CAD models as Maya scenes also with many materials and textures I'd like to preserve.

I've successfully exported and imported these FBX files into Unity and retianed the necessary materials and textures.

2 things aren't working however

- the poly count is WAY too high (+5 million tris , verts!)
- seem to be missing normals

Is anyone aware of some good retopology tutorials for Maya?
What about 3rd party tool that would help automate poly reduction while still retaining textures?

I've heard great things about the free Instant Meshes for one...

Any help appreciated!

Quad draw is really good for retopo in Maya. Not sure which version of Maya you have but the poly tools are in Maya 2016 and even 2015 i think.

As Samspon has replied already, the retopo tools in Maya are very good and quad draw will let you retain a good shape providing you you know exactly how and where to place your geometry.

We do cover retopology in our Batman head tutorial here at Simply Maya: https://simplymaya.com/autodesk-maya...al/?tut_id=377

However, if you are after a very quick fix without the fuss I suggest you could use the reduce option in Maya or if you have access to zbrush, you can use zremesher as well.

cheers
Jay

Hi everybody! For maya 2019 in pc I've developed a quick toolbox with all the tools you need to make a retopology process for your hard surface or even some organic stuff in my website. There is also a mini tutorial. Hope it helps you in retopology and any comment or advice is welcome!
