Drawing skills needed

I’m not at all by any means an artist, I never went to art school but want to work on my drawing skills for Maya, If I could get some feed back on what I’m doing wrong I’d appreciate any comments.

Not bad bud.. just need some better reference for proportions... A human body is 7 in a half heads high.

Keep it up=)

Not bad, if you want to work on you drawing skills you should start by drawing from a photo. Looks like you are going for a cartoon look? Use a B&W photo too. If you only have color then photo copy it to make it B&W. Learn to draw what is there. Do not ouline. Draw and sketch the shading. Work the areas slowly. Do a rough outer shape first then work in the detail so the perportions are not of. An "Anatomy for the artists" book would be a good investment. Use a smudge stick until you get better line control. This is just my two sense.

So your saying I should use the head as a scale for the body?

yes ... scale using head.

here's a reference .

my friend gave it to me. It's a sketch by Andrew Loomis

What drawing style are you going for?

I tend to draw all my characters in a anime style as it's more fun but most of the teechniques i picked up drawing anime can be used to draw realistic figures.

I think you biggest problem is proprtion. An example on this image is that the feet are too small. If things aren't in proportion people know it doesn't look right straight away.

Trying to go for DragonBallZ look, as far as style maybe the Cartoon look if thats a style?..

mayaguy_dr,, Thanks for the post,, this will really help out,, thanks:beer:

I've been looking for that Loomis sketch

I also can't draw very well, but a few months ago I could hardly draw at all. My point is even though it seems like your drawings are crap or you're not getting any better, if you stick at it and draw every day in a month or two you'll look back on this image and think it was done by someone else.

btw, what do you think of these and how could i improve on them:

DragonBallZ is an anime style.

Here is one of my DragonBallZ drawings. Is that what you mean.

If that's the style you want to draw i suggest you find your favourite character and draw them. That way you should find it more fun and have something you can relate to at the end.

Yea,, looking for something like that but, want to have a front and side view for modeling.

and if I could ask a maybe stupid question,, what did you do to color vagita,, what type of coloring Method

ckyuk 13-10-2003 10:35 PM

Also get the "How to draw manga" books they are the best on the market. They had me drawing in days, they maid i drew is supposed to be the person off the front cover of the first book.

To color vagita i used an old method, but to color my other drawings (see links above) i opened it in photoshop, duplicated the background layer, make the new layer a multiply layer then draw the colors on layers under that one using the Polygon Lasso tool and a fill bucket, that way you keep the lines. Also i inked it before scanning it.
