May/June - Noob - eddiesson

I couldn't finish challange of last month. I will this time.

OK. Animation would be a javelin throwing creature. It's a one-time action of course. Or I can try a miner for loopable animation. I haven't decided yet.

I'll try to create my own model, texture and rig. I will avoid a human figure, it'll look unreal in the end. But it'll be humanoid of course. maybe a fantastic creature? I don't know yet.

I did some research about what to model... throwing spear, not so human... why not a greek soldier, a hoplite? they are identified with spears, and have helms and armor which hide their anatomy.

Oh my god, what have I done?!.... A character with a helmet with feathers, almost like a tail, and a skirt...

I decided to keep the helmet. for the skirt, maybe I'll do it with metal sheets, so they'll be easier to animate... I hope.

Anyway, isn't this a "challange"? Bring it on! :)

I always have a backdoor too. I can put feathers 90 degrees turned alongvertical axis. this is another ancient greek soldier helmet design.

I started modelling. Done with the helmet.

post post post results! :D

helmet, 91 vertex.

I think I must focus on body pronto. I'll be texturing it if I have any time left.

nice helmet. nice, efficient looking structure (poly-wise)

kiveun 18-05-2006 08:20 AM

Low poly helmet in place. Good job ! :attn:
Want to see more

thank you for the nice words.

Before modelling the body, I decided to spend some time on doing some research. Because I tried to make a rig just once, and shoulders were total failure (as you may expect from a first time rigger). Throwing a spear involves a solid shoulder rigging so...

eddiesson 19-05-2006 02:28 AM

Low poly modelling is as hard as hi-poly modelling! I can never be sure about where to place a vertex.

I must have some mistakes around clavicula/shoulder area. I'll work on it.
Below is progress for tonight. I plan to finish the model and start rigging untill the end of weekend.

maybe add some more buffness to the guy's arms, these guys were very tough people, very strong.

But its good so far!

Nice start eddiesson and really great choice of model and action.

Good luck in the contest!

I've finished body model, and I made him tougher. His hands and feet are missing. I don't know how much detail should I do for the hands... I will be start rigging just as I finish the model, probably in a few days. Body has 458 polygon.

Any comment for anatomy and topology, welcome. it's my first character.

It's looking good eddiesson - the main thing that stands out is the shoulder area - it's looking a little boxy and the shoulders may be a bit narrow.

kiveun 22-05-2006 06:54 AM

Yes, really good everywhere but the shoulder area need a fix.
Here is an anatomy picture ==>
