half Polygon Cylinder / Cylinder with 180

Hello everyone,

long time ago (when I bought UT 2004 with Maya PLE and 10 hours of VTMs) I could build "halfed" cylinders.
I had to enter a degree value or 180° instead of 360° but I can'f find it anymore.
If you guys know what I mean I'd apreciate it if you could tell me how to make those cylinders.

you can do that with NURBS cylinders by adjusting the end or start sweep attirbutes. For polygons, just the delete the faces from the half you don't want.

I tried deleting the faces already, but then I have a "hole" on one side of the sphere.
How can I fix that?

Extrude an edge an merge it with the opposite?

that, or u can go to polygons>append tool, then select edge A then edge B, then press enter to close it

I tried both but it doesn't seem to work though.

I thought of taking the vertecies and move them close to these of the other side and then merge them but I don't remember how I manage not to merge one in the middle way of two but to make one vertex "sticky" and merge the other onto it.

select one of the edges along the open rim then select edit polygons-->fill hole. After that you'l probably want to split the new face to match the rest of the mesh.

Thx, this just works fine.
But now I have another problem:
I want to "carve" something out of another object, means:

I want to take object A, place it half into object B and then (with some secret trick you'll tell me ;)) want to "subtract" it from B.
Is this possible?

mhcannon 15-03-2005 05:33 PM

That would be a boolean operation. select the object to be "cut" then shift-select the object to "cut" with, then select polygons-->booleans-->difference and that should subtract the second object from the first. Boolean operations are pretty fincky though. make sure neither object has any open edges/faces and watch out for areas where vertices are very close together. Good luck.

Erm... yea, very difficult.
I dont know what I'm doing wrong. It does not only subtract object A from B but it just deletes both.

I want the marked object to be "cut out" of the other one. But neither boolean==>difference nor any other boolean works.
I already selected the chassis first (both marked, chassis white) and then the other way round.
It always deletes both objects.

mhcannon 15-03-2005 07:30 PM

hey, I warned you booleans were finicky :) Open the script editor to see if it list any problems with the boolean operation. Also make sure neither objects has any open faces, if it does use the append to polygon tool to fill them. Read the help file on boolean operations for more technical info. Good luck!

How can I check objects for open faces?

mhcannon 16-03-2005 04:33 PM

increase the size of the border edges. This can be done in either the preferences (under the polygons section) or in the dispay-->polygon components options. Once this is activated and increased you should see a thicker line anywhere there is an open edge.

take care the booleans only work with very simple oppération
as your géometry dont will not work try but seams complexe
you should project your object then delete the face end file hole
try different way :)

Baaah, boolean is too hard. :p
J deleted some faces now but I when fill the hole it adds the faces I just deleted. :p

So, I want to extrude an edge and merge its vertecies onto the ones on the other side of the hole.
How can I merge vertecies so that they dont merge in the middle between each other but "onto" one of them.

Here's a litte picture, I hope it helps you to understand my question.

So this is how they merge by default:

And I want them to merge like that:

Thanks for your help. :)

Edit:

I found my UT Bonus disc with the maya VTMs. Problem is solved now. :)
