Can someone explain UV please?

OK, I understand the xyz coordinate system, but the whole concept of U & V is something I'm totally confused about.

Hello?

jrodiles 23-09-2002 05:39 AM

U, V and W are like X Y and Z in certain way but they are inside the geometry...

jrodiles 23-09-2002 05:40 AM

in Mastering Maya COmplete 2 in page 236 you will learn about it
V is refering to the Vertical side and U reffers to the Horizontal side But you can allways rotate or modify their points on the UV mapping Tool on Maya

UVs are simply a way to tell Maya which pixels from a texture file goes where in a 3D model.

U and V are surface directions, while XYZ are coordinate directions... brief but concise definition... let us know if you need more info

Thanks for the reply guys. I sort of understand what you are saying, I'll read the Mastering Maya book, thanks jrodiles. Actually I have Mastering Maya 3, I'm assuming it should be in there somewhere if it was in Mastering Maya 2.
