Cell Shading...

hey guys, i was just wondering if anyone could help me out, i wish to learn how to create a cell shading effect, like in windwaker for gamecube (even though i didnt like that particular zelda game much). All i want to do is make a cool little video short, using this ninja i made when i was bored.

Use the Maya vector renderer.

if you want a toon shader like in windwaker, you need to download it from somewhere like highend3d.com. do a search for toon shaders, they have a few there. tweak the settings to your preference.
nice ninja. |

Yeah, I wrote a "toon" shader some time ago for v4.5 (see attached). To edit the color, change the ramp shader, and to control the line attributes, see the "extra attributes" in the channel box.
The problem with every "toon" shader I've seen (and I'm not counting plug-in renderers) is that they all do nice jobs with curved surfaces, but do poorly with straight edges. Most WILL NOT even outline a cube. Maybe use a "toon" shader for the main part of your scene, and then use the vector renderer to get your outlines, and comp it together in post. |
ok, i feel kinda stupid asking thins since ive been using maya for a fair amount of time now, but how do i use a shader?

apply it to a model with the hypershader
select your model, right click on the shader and apply it. |
