When I use Boolean union, my parts disappear

Hello, I am new to Maya and I have made a character. The problem is, after converting him into a polygon, when i try to use a boolean union on him, the united parts disappear. What's going on, and how can I prevent this? Thank you.

directive, try make sure they are intercepting each other ...
