Hammer.H : Summer Challenge

Hi all,
I'm pretty new to Maya and the forum, but i regestered a while ago. I kinda got side tracked so couldn't get into the whole learning thing. anyway i know enough now to have a go at this challenge.
So...

i noticed people suggesting helicopters and airplanes - unfortunately i'm not rich enough for these to be my everyday objects. so i was thinking somthing smaller, (also i'm starting quite late on this one!).

not actually sure what to go for but will keep you updated.

i think i will make an abandoned toilet, would that count?

arran 18-08-2008 03:44 AM

ha ha - that's a great idea. :) i'm sure it'd be fine.

looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

here is what i have so far. i stuck a shader on to try some different colours... also just noticed the back of the toilet bowl is looking really square!

A great start on the modelling..looking forward to seeing the texturing on this since I have seen a few grossed out toilets in my time as a contruction worker.

i've pretty much finished modeling i think. gonna uv unwrap and texture over the next week or so. i put shaders on to give a feel for the colour. but I will probably beat it up and take bits out.

any plumbers here?
...this is what i have done for the toilet tank.

looking smooth! how'd you do the pipe-screw part (dont know technical names) at the bottom-back there?

and aren't toilets meant to have toilet seats? or is that why this one was abandoned? :p

got shots of the wireframe?

honestdom 24-08-2008 01:03 PM

the screw bit was a case of just pulling the edges out. i added more with the add edge loop tool and then offset edge and scaled then up.

i've been uv-unwraping so the textures and abandonment will be done in a week or so. :) ...maybe sooner, i have nothing much to do right now!

(i'll throw some wire frame stuff up)

ha - great model hammer.horror - this is looking cool so far. :) i'm wondering if the tank bit should maybe be a bit wider - but that might just be me. also - it looks like the bowl has a bit of a bulge at the front.

honestdom 24-08-2008 03:13 PM

cool thanks arran, i'll sort out the bulge or just make it part of the abandonment process...

although i guess toilets crack rather than squish. :p

honestdom 31-08-2008 05:18 PM

started some textures, here is an update...

lol not much but its a start! i've had other things to deal with recently so the progress has slowed.

Here is an occlusion of the model, and from the looks of it there is a bit of a bump in the bowl part. anyone got any suggestions on how to correct it? i thought i could try averaging the verts or just model it again.

i'd probably just remake that area - maybe with nurbs. it will probably be a lot quicker than trying to fix the existing model.

i like your textures so far - the rust looks great.

honestdom 03-09-2008 12:54 PM

Not much of an update... do you think this is too much on the abandonment?

not at all - i might muck it up some more - i think it's looking great - keep at it! :)

Looks great so far and could stand a little more if anything, also the outside needs a little neglect .
