Hi Gang

Here is my first all-Maya character effort from the 'Maya 4 Fundamentals' book. I wanted to model a character in Maya and then rig and animate him to get a real feel for the program rather than just dabbling with it.

The texturing needs work, I don't quite know how to texture in Maya yet. His eyes are that colour cos he drinks to barrels of grog a day. It's not crappy use shaders...he, he.

I have just finished putting a basic rig on the character and will be presenting him doing a walk by then end of this week - I hope! The next tricky bit will be rigging the hands and creating morph shapes for the head - aaaghhhhhhhhhhh!!!

Nice work, Gazz. Like what you've done so far.

Raul you wanna watch what you say about the little gremlin dude - Alf - he is very sensitive, whats more this is his BIG BROTHER and he has a BAD TEMPER!!! What do you expect from drinking two barrels of grog a day - he, he!

Attempting walk cycle today and playing with animation curves and expressions, although I am not sure about expressions I think they can make things look a bit automated...

I've attached a close up of the face, it probably needs more modelling and definately work on the texturing but I want concerntrate on the animation side first.

BTW, can you attach more than one file at a time for posting? I cannot seem to work it out.

First quickie preview as to how my walk cycle is coming along... it's getting there! I have done loads of walk cycles but that was in A:M doing it in Maya means learning the program - that's the tricky bit!

I am finding lots of little oddities happening (eyeballs going crossed) but that is my lack of knowledge of the software...

lord in heaven . beautiful. so do you anything else but trolls. hahha love it man.

gazzamataz 09-01-2003 09:50 AM

What do you mean trolls? It's me!!! Ya I do seem to be stuck on Green Men but I do other stuff. Must be 'The Lord of the Rings' going around in me head.

Want to see other stuff look at me website:

great job.. with your skills in kinemics, i'd love to see you add more detail soon. You will rock.

Thanks Iron Tick, it's nice getting a bit of feedback.

To be quite honest I am trying to get a real feel for modeling, animating and texturing in Maya. I am used to Animation Master but got a bit disillusioned with it due to it's bugginess. The new version 10 seems to have resolved these issues and I still love some of the tools in it but I am comparing all the time with Maya. Maya hasn't crashed on me yet!

Sometimes, however, I feel like quiting on Maya and going back to A:M because it seems a bit overly complicated but I still keep coming back for more so something must be working...

your skin weights look really nice! As far as the animation the walk cycle looks well done to, but I would recomend adding some up and down movements on the shoulders, they look a little stiff. Looks good,
Brian
