Stick Man Animation

Well I have decided to drop my mexican projecct for now because Dragonhawk wanted to do a combined project with me :)
This project is going to be a cell shaded, samurai stickman animation. We still dont have much of a plot but were working on it. Sadly Dragonhawk has went on holiday and will be away for the next 10 days or so and left me in charge of the project, he asked me to model characters, weapons clothes etc... so here is my progress so far:
a dagger type thing

a samurai sword

Comments welcome as always :)

RubberChicken 23-08-2004 03:44 PM

Rubber chicken you are a man of many talents, cel shading looks good.
Will be nice to see the animation.
cheers
Ben:alien:

RubberChicken 24-08-2004 07:31 AM

Cant take much credit for the cel shading as its just a standard toon shader that I have optimized slightly... but thanks :)

RubberChicken 24-08-2004 12:49 PM

Another dagger: (top default shader- bottom cel shaded)

NextDesign 24-08-2004 02:23 PM

Looks cool so far mate! But what where the stickmen made out of? or did you just lower the diffuse?

RubberChicken 24-08-2004 03:54 PM

Yeh diffuse is set to minimum.

FrenZy 24-08-2004 10:11 PM

Looks nice and original m8. Cant wait to see them going at it:)

twisteddragon33 24-08-2004 11:26 PM

i think i have that knife in the bottom:)

RubberChicken 25-08-2004 04:26 PM

FrenZy: thanks :)

twisteddragon33: This is actually a very popular shape for a knife... I seen it in countless films, cartoons and even shop windows but why you have this type of knife I do not know
*scary* :D

Anyway I was hoping to update this thread today but I just couldnt find the time to do any work on this project :(

Zyk0tiK 26-08-2004 01:03 AM

Looking nice man, I tell ya the best toon shader ever though, the one they got in Futurama, that stuff looks just like a cartoon.

Dragonhawk 26-08-2004 06:50 AM

hi RUbberchicken!
I'm posting here from Bavaria (away from maya :( ) and want to tell you that you are doing grate stuff!i'm slowly doubting that there s a need for me :)......I think of the storyboard and the environment/streets the story shall take place.

RubberChicken 26-08-2004 08:36 AM

Zyk0tiK: Yeh that futurama shader is quite amazing, shame they cancelled the series... :(

Dragonhawk: Im glad you like it :) and dont worry there is still pleanty to do on this project so I will need you when you come back. BTW I hope your having fun in Bavaria

Back to the project now. I have made a few new stick men characters but there isnt really much point posting any pics as all these stickmen are just very similar to each other. Need a brake from maya, but tomorrow I will hopefully get some envoiroments done :)

RubberChicken 27-08-2004 10:38 AM

OK I have started on a simple cartoony envoiroment, still got a fair bit to do but here is what I got so far:

ckyuk 27-08-2004 11:18 AM

Reminds me of the Xiao Xiao's series that i loved, so i can't wait to see this finished.

RubberChicken 28-08-2004 12:01 PM

Xiao Xaio is the main inspiration for this project, although this animation is not going to be as complicated as Xiao Xiao because that would take forever to make :D
A little update, made a temple kind of thing:

NextDesign 28-08-2004 12:28 PM

I think that you should make the image look flatter. But I don't know what your going for. But anyway good work.

Keep going!

RubberChicken 28-08-2004 01:11 PM

What do you mean by flatter? Make the hills smaller? I want this to be a valley, but I guess I could make the hills slightly smaller.

RubberChicken 28-08-2004 01:57 PM

Another little update:

RubberChicken 29-08-2004 02:40 PM

Modeld some new stuff:
A old style chinese blade

And another little composition:

RubberChicken 29-08-2004 05:48 PM

I decided to have a brake from modeling and get started on some animating. I have made a stickman walk cycle . Comments welcome.

NextDesign 30-08-2004 01:03 AM

Theres a little skip or something at one part of the animation.

RubberChicken 30-08-2004 06:29 AM

What part of the walk because I cant quite see it?

RubberChicken 30-08-2004 11:26 AM

Had a little fun :D

Kick

It would be cool if one of these guys had some Meridian axes. I modelled some but the thread here is so old all the images are gone, this is the best reference i could find.

RubberChicken 31-08-2004 10:27 AM

Thanks for the idea, Ill get right on it :)

RubberChicken 31-08-2004 11:37 AM

Well here is what I manadged to put together :)

RubberChicken 31-08-2004 04:57 PM

I did some blood tests (Warning does contain moderate gore :D)

Blood Test 1

Blood Test 2

rmajchrz 31-08-2004 05:52 PM

Nice work,

Was Cell Shading used in South Park?

ckyuk 31-08-2004 07:13 PM

Blood done in true kung-fu movie style :D

oh, and the axes look great.

RubberChicken 31-08-2004 07:56 PM

Thanks guys
South Park could be cel shaded i guess but is South Park even made using a 3d application? It just seems too cartoony...

rmajchrz 31-08-2004 09:31 PM

Why yes, They even use Maya. In fact I have a Alias|Wavefront 98 Siggrapah t-shirt with Cartmen on it. This
was back when they used Power Animator. (Pre Maya)
I posted the Cell shader question because your recent post kind-of reminded me of that South Park look. That's a good thing.

again great work man. I realy liked the anim.

Here's a link to an article on Alias and South Park.

RubberChicken 01-09-2004 08:08 PM

Cool, intresting article.
Anyway I have began the animation process and the first 850 frames have been batch renderd. Batch rendering was hell because I had to do it 3 times!!!!! When I batched my scene the first time I renderd it out as JPEG imadges but when I imported those into quicktime it was terrible quality  The second time around I renderd my scene as TGA imadges but when I imported that into quicktime it was 250mb!!! Finally I chose PNG imadges and that gave me very good quality at a nifty 50mb :)
Here is a shot:

Pony 01-09-2004 11:43 PM

Stick figures are cool. And thease are well done. I like.

EvoxReloaded 02-09-2004 07:20 AM

actually trey claimed that southpark was "made entirely of construction paper and hours on the crapper".. btw RC do you have a tutorial on making an environment such as you have done?? i have no idea where to start and that looks great.. man i suck really bad...

RubberChicken 02-09-2004 08:00 AM

Thanks Pony :)
I dont have any tutoril on this, but I guess I could make a quick little tut for you when I get back from school.

EvoxReloaded 02-09-2004 02:29 PM

that would be awesome.. the way i model is improvised...

RubberChicken 02-09-2004 03:31 PM

Ok click here for your tut, hope it helps and if you have any other questions just PM me :)

RubberChicken 04-09-2004 11:15 AM

Well Dragonhawk decided to change the storyline slightly, therefore we decided to turn the first scene into a trailer or a promation film if you will.
