Hi all, I've been contemplating this all week with not much luck. All I can think of is my digital camera but that isn't really original. Gonna look at HDRI seeing as it is mentioned lots at the moment :)
Anyways here's a photo of it (nikon coolpix 4100) for reference:

joed8349 07-11-2005 06:48 PM

A digital camera may not be too orginial, but you can determine the point of view your final image will have. I suggest maybe having a shot of that open slot (I think its the battery slot) on the camera since it has a lot of internal detail to focus on.

Fallenswordsman 07-11-2005 08:17 PM

Good choice, Tickle - I was thinking of doing something similar but found something else to occupy me.

t1ck135 08-11-2005 08:41 AM

good point joe, I was thinking of making sure that different surfaces were visible and the very shiny inside cover of the battery compartment should help :)

However, there seems to be some quite complex models being developed so it's making me wonder whether to do something more complicated too. My other two options were my girlfriend's cello and a soundblaster sound card (complex circuit board) so if anyone thinks either of those would be better then let me know.

One possible strategy for creating more interest/detail in a model of a more simple object could be to depict damage. So instead of modeling a nice clean version of a digital camera you could attempt to model a digital camera that looks as if it was dropped from a third floor balcony or hit with a hammer.

Just a thought ... though I wouldn't suggest actually whacking your camera just to get all the tinkery bits inside right;)

cheers for the idea dave, think I'm going to change and do my girlfriends cello as it has more character and has some good surfaces to play with. Also there is some surprisingly detailed little bits I'd never have thought.

Here's some reference snaps from tonight, *hopefully* have something to show tomorrow :)
oh and I'll be starting on the bow first (not in the photos)

R4s1n 09-11-2005 04:09 PM

good luck on cello!

t1ck135 09-11-2005 08:48 PM

cheers r4sin :)

Looking forwards to seeing how this one goes. Good Choice !

Cheers

joed8349 09-11-2005 09:05 PM

I think it is a better choise than the digital camera. I cant wait to see more...

jsprogg 09-11-2005 09:21 PM

A more complex thing than it looks .....watching with interest .
goodluck with it :)

t1ck135 10-11-2005 08:58 AM

cheers paul, joe and jsprogg :)

The bow has a few bits with mother of pearl inlaid so if anyone sees any tutorials on how to recreate that effect then let me know :D
Hopefully more progress up tonight.

t1ck135 10-11-2005 08:15 PM

well not enough progress today to warrant a posting and I'm busy till next week so here's hoping everybody's models progress well

THX1138 11-11-2005 01:49 AM

Same with me aswell, not much progress. Been sketching tons of diagrams on mine to help model more accurately. I think mine has more parts than VIM's PinBall machine.

Hope to see more progress on your model soon, and I cant wait to see it textured. Your texturing is awsome!

t1ck135 11-11-2005 08:41 AM

Cheers THX1138 :) it'll be interesting to start learning a bit more about shaders and how to modify them.
I've been knocking out orthographic style images at a good rate as well to help with the general shape of the model. It seems to really help in the long run if you can nail that shape early on.

Looking forward to seeing your model develop as well :)

t1ck135 14-11-2005 06:11 PM

very minor update, adding the other end of the bow in as well as adding some reference pics to compare how off I am. Ignore the bottom right edge on the last one as I'm still shaping it ;)

t1ck135 15-11-2005 07:09 PM

cheers mayafreak and angalid :)

minor update tonight, started on the head of the cello as I was itching to see how to do the swirly effect.
still lots to shape but I've taken some quick photo shots to show the detail I'll be trying to achieve.

THX1138 16-11-2005 01:30 AM

Very intresting modeling technique for the Cello. The project is really taking shape.:)

t1ck135 16-11-2005 09:01 PM

cheers :)
tons more to do yet ;)

t1ck135 21-11-2005 05:53 PM

Managed to snap a bit of time to do a bit more. Can't wait to have a weekend to actually spend a fair bit of time on this (not for a few weekends though).
Anyways, the bow just needs a bit more detail adding and then joining up. Here's a quick grab to show the bend it has (not tightened up to play with).
Also I've started adding detail to the head (smoothed version showing) and started on the basic shape of the body.

This is looking really good so far. No crits from me :)

BMS 21-11-2005 07:43 PM

I can't see the pictures?

t1ck135 21-11-2005 09:03 PM

probably my host which can be up and down a bit :(

t1ck135 22-11-2005 09:02 PM

slow progress on this baby, maybe I'll get some proper time around xmas... damn those busy weekends ;)

wire of body and blocked in neck, smoothed in the lower image to see if its shaping up ok:

R4s1n 23-11-2005 05:38 AM

Good progress so far! I especially like the wire and how you did the top part of the cello. All flows in together.

t1ck135 24-11-2005 08:37 AM

thanks R4s1n :)
the middle section bumps up far more than what I thought so it will need some more lines adding/tweaking.

THX1138 24-11-2005 11:36 AM

You have really captured the essence of the real thing t1ck35. Such an ellegant instrument. Cant wait to see it textured!

Great Model Tickle..

The middle section for me is too high, as you said, its the only thing I would pick up as being off, but saying that you have yet to add the strings and bits...

mayafreak3 26-11-2005 08:49 PM

Good Work. Nice clean modeleing.. on both the body of the cello and the head!

I'd like to see the textures for this as well.

peace,

mayafreak3

t1ck135 29-11-2005 07:29 PM

thanks R@nSiD :) I'm taking my time over edgeloops to make the mesh flow around the model. The height according to my reference photos is correct, but I think if anything is out it'll be more prominent soon

clean is what I'm after so thanks mayafreak3 :) your model is far more realistic though!

Finally got round to having some time to play with this. I've added in the string pegs and rasied the flat area of the body. Next step will be the neck area followed by the base and the strings.

This is really nice clean work...enjoying this a thread a lot.

metallicjet66 29-11-2005 08:50 PM

very good man! cant wait till you start making textures for this baby!

magicsy 30-11-2005 05:06 PM

really really good well done pal.
keep it up good modeling on the keys n stuff.

t1ck135 30-11-2005 09:08 PM

cheers jsprogg, metallicjet66 and magicsy, the encouragement is much appreciated :)

I've added a more shaped neck in today and also have been playing with polys around the back of the head to get an indented look

p.s, I think the images have gone up - my host has gone a bit screwy just now (as usual)

THX1138 01-12-2005 03:48 AM

Very nice progress!

Fallenswordsman 01-12-2005 08:12 AM

Yep, looking good to me. Nice job so far, Mr.Tickle. :attn:

t1ck135 03-12-2005 02:51 PM

thanks THX1138 and Fallenswordsman, your comments are greatly appreciated :)

Another update, I've properly modelled the bottom of the head and have got round to attaching it to the neck.
Here are a couple of wire views (mad lines but it *should* all be quaded).
