Small update. I'm still experimenting with shirt color. I've also adjusted the materials some to get a "softer" look and have adjusted the lighting. I've still got a slight 'halo' under the left forearm. :)

kbrown 10-11-2002 10:59 PM

wow...he sure has eaten his spinach ;) some popeye style? :)

raul 10-11-2002 11:14 PM

i think you need a tatoo. on your right arm. great pic mike.

mtmckinley 10-11-2002 11:19 PM

kbrown - lol, yeah. I actually got the idea of the massive forearm/no wrists thing from a comic book artist I saw a long time ago. It stuck with me as looking unique and I decided to incorporate that into this one. :)

raul - If I had one, I'd put it, but I'm afraid I'm tatooless. :D

mtmckinley 10-11-2002 11:21 PM

New wire:

BabyDuck 10-11-2002 11:24 PM

wow, cool, amazing

what i dont understand though, why are that less polys enough for the character. and how do you know it looks good in smooth? you smooth it every 10 seconds and put back to unsmooth??? i always manage to get a real dense wireframe when i only add some little detail :(

and for the shirt, a ugly flower shirt with bright yellow and orange paintfx flowers might be worth testing - so it really looks like 70's. :D

mtmckinley 10-11-2002 11:31 PM

Thanks, babyduck. :)

yeah, I smooth it to see what it looks like, then go back and change if I need to. Eventually, with practice, you anticipate how the smooth works so you don't have to test it so often.

That's an intersting idea. lol I'm not really going for a 70s look, though... seeing as the character is based on me. And I wasn't alive in the 70s. ;)

BabyDuck 10-11-2002 11:40 PM

oh i see. i guess i should try staying in polys til the end. but i am too new to maya (and 3d altogether) that i might try poly only when i can get something useful with subds. but i seen today what you mean - the legs on my ant in mini challenge turned out way better than i thought after turning to subds. maya is amazing

mtmckinley 11-11-2002 12:59 AM

Yeah, SubDs are cool, but they're a little too much for my computer. At least, to edit anyway. I can convert to them fine, but if I try to mess with them, my comp goes sllloooooooowwww. :D

mtmckinley 11-11-2002 06:11 AM

Ok, here's a new update. It's mostly more details, like wrinkles and such... I know, I'm avoiding those shoes, aren't I? lol

Here's a hi-res version (136k) www.mtmckinley.net/cg_toon35hi.jpg

awesome work as always!

Kurt 11-11-2002 05:10 PM

Mike are the arms attached to the shirt or are they still separate?

Its looking too sweet heheh.

Kurt

Hey, what's wrong with a tangerine shirt? lol

adldesigner 11-11-2002 11:15 PM

Actually from a designer´s point of view, tangerine is one of the best color combinations you can get with a blue jean.
-just another pointless post- :p

mtmckinley 12-11-2002 02:18 AM

heh, I thought they matched pretty good. :)

Here's newest update... started on shoes. I'm thinking I'm just going to keep these for now, and go ahead to work on rigging and such. Then environment.

Kurt 12-11-2002 03:56 AM

Your too cool for school mike =) Love the shoes.

mtmckinley 12-11-2002 04:16 AM

Thanks, Kurt. :) I'm thinking of making the shoes just all black... orange on feet seems to be a tad distracting.

anyone agree?

For those keeping up with the cgtalk.com challenge (that this is my entry for), the scenario is to have a toon version of the artist (that's me :P ) performing a non-computer related hobby. I was thinking of having 'me' be in the middle of cleaning... like vaccuming, washing dishes, scrubbing floors... all at the same time! lol Not that cleaning is a hobby, but it seems like I'm doing it ALLL the time. lol

Any other ideas?

sdch1000 12-11-2002 04:22 AM

Wow, that's a great model Mike. Love those wriknles in the clothes.

mtmckinley 12-11-2002 04:25 AM

Thanks, sdch1000!

Yeah, those are bugger to put in. lol I've still gotta add more!

Kurt 12-11-2002 04:31 AM

Black is ok for the shoes, but I kinda like the orange.

mtmckinley 12-11-2002 04:48 AM

Well, here's a comparison shot:

http://www.mtmckinley.net/cg_toon37.jpg

Kurt 12-11-2002 04:55 AM

Still like the orange one better. Maybe try a grey or blue on the shoes.

mtmckinley 12-11-2002 04:29 PM

I'll experiment with the shoe color. I've got brown right now...

http://www.mtmckinley.net/cg_toon39.jpg

And I've started working on facial expressions:

http://www.mtmckinley.net/cg_toon41.jpg

Which scenario would you like better?

A - I'm in the kitchen tryin to wash dishes, vaccum, feed the dog, and scrub the floors AT THE SAME TIME with a disgruntled look on my face

or

B - Some sort of superhero situation. :D

Kurt 12-11-2002 04:51 PM

I like A) its diffrent. Bring up the lip and cheek on the side the eye is closed a bit. =)

Roman 12-11-2002 05:19 PM

heheh.. it's lookin' wicked man.. :p
i'd prefer A) too.. it should look quite interesting.. hehe

mtmckinley 12-11-2002 05:33 PM

Thanks, guys. :)

You're one step ahead of me, Kurt. lol

http://www.mtmckinley.net/cg_toon42.jpg

Kurt 12-11-2002 06:41 PM

looking bettter still need a bit more lip and cheek lift=)

Roman 12-11-2002 10:50 PM

hehe nice face expression.. although i also think it needs a little lift..
you could also lower the other eyebrow abit and keep the lip and cheek like that.. sorta give him a "dirty" grin type look.. (did i make any sense.. lol)
it's turnin' out really cool man.. :p

mtmckinley 13-11-2002 04:36 AM

I'll keep that in mind. :)

Ok, here's my last update on the character part of this model. I've still got to do the inside of the mouth and make him a wrist watch, but I'll take care of that later. Now, it's back to the sketch book to see about the kitchen katastrophe. :D

mrmacca 13-11-2002 04:46 AM

This is looking so brilliant. Can't wait to see it completed.

BabyDuck 13-11-2002 12:08 PM

i like the orange shoes better. but maybe you should try cherry red instead of orange (so it does not match the shirt perfectly) - that might look even cooler (to me)

mumbojumbo_13 13-11-2002 12:14 PM

i love it who cares what colours you use
--
also you should do A if you can get ya arms + legs to do all those thigs at once i dunno how they can say no to you cant wait :D

Kurt 13-11-2002 01:42 PM

Great job Mike you will have a kick but entry.=)

mtmckinley 13-11-2002 05:02 PM

Thanks, guys!

I'll experiment with shoe color later. :)

Here's a rough sketch for the cleaning scenario:

http://www.mtmckinley.net/cg_toon44.jpg

One idea I had was to hang a squirt bottle of cleaning solution off his belt or something, heh heh

Roman 13-11-2002 06:54 PM

hehe.. that should be interesting man..get to it.. hehe :p

Kurt 13-11-2002 07:01 PM

Looking forward with great anticipation Mike.

Darkware 13-11-2002 11:10 PM
