Got a few ideas now but the one I'm liking is a low tech junk ship as the vehicle mode. Its going to transform into a dragon looking mech (biped) but maintain that old rugged, run down look if possible.
Here's the vehicle mode reference (and shows pretty obviously where the mech's wings will come from ;) If I stick to this one then some scans of design work/mechanics of the transformation will follow. |
If you carry this idea out, it will be a great model. Good idea!
|
gonna put a twist on it and base it in the future where you can have flying ships etc (like the junk ship at the beginning of the fifth element). Its more to alleviate my worry of what practical uses a junk ship would be to the autobots or decepticons. Maybe its disguise would be for espionage in a near future where eastern culture has intermingled more with western culture (a little like the idea in firefly/serenity).
Have I got enough cliche ties yet???? ;) |
I've sketched out some ideas (if I can get them scanned) and have started looking at blocking in the basic shapes between the two modes.

Awesome concept!
This could really rock ... GO GO GO! Dave |
it reminded me of Metal Gear! :D my favourite computer game EVER. (along with thief)
|
thats what I'm after eddieson - a mix between mechs and transformers as the robot stage, really big and chunky!
Here's a couple of concept sheets showing some ideas. I quite like the chunkiness of the middle and bottom left bots in the first sheet. On the second sheet I was looking at alternative legs. Plenty more design work to do though :) http://www.flash-fx.net/3D/images/tr...s/concept1.jpg http://www.flash-fx.net/3D/images/tr...s/concept2.jpg |
i think were in for something good here.
keep going t1ck135, this will definitely be interesting. |
I'd love to make sketches like that.
Huge robot on the way. These sketches shows well the imposing metal mass. I love it. Keep it on. It's coming nicely. |
Great work on concepts, t1ck135. This will be a very good progress to see.
|
Excellent work so far T1ck.
I really like the idea of a junk ship transformer - it could be cool to really keep it looking messed up and I think big chunky robots are definitely the way to go. Looking forward to seeing how this project develops.... and it is difficult to not start my own robot in disguise! |
i love your work...
|
cheers guys :)
I'm still working out the bot stage so there will be more concepts to come. Si p.s, get yourself into the challenge arran - texturing etc is not a requirement so you can concentrate on the modelling process first :) |
Thanks T1ck - I'll keep that in mind.
|
I'm still working on the bot concepts but feel that it might be easier to actually have a visual of the basic shape that will be transforming. It should then be easier to see where bits will actually transform from and which bits I hadn't thought about could be used.
The best thing would probably be to create a physical version so you can easily move it about. Anyways here's the start of the junk ship hull. I'm thinking that a lot of the underside curve can be used as armour above the actual main bot shape. Also the bot ending up looking like wood planks should be fun! http://www.flash-fx.net/3D/images/tr...ers/ship01.gif http://www.flash-fx.net/3D/images/tr...rs/ship01a.gif |
Here's a bit more development on the ship so that I can visualise what bits definately go where.
And here's a first proper 'experiment' with the positioning of the parts. - The tip of the hull reverses into the head section. - The next section down forms the shoulder pads/shoulders. - The next section down splits up into the midrif and possibly the arms - The lower section is constructed from the rest of the ship and the feet are the engines where the engine panels have expanded out (not quite there as I'd like them a little thicker and stumpier but a bit more work might get what I'm after :) ) http://www.flash-fx.net/3D/images/tr...ansformer1.gif http://www.flash-fx.net/3D/images/tr...nsformer1a.gif |
and an unclear non-technical technical drawing showing the process... ;)

Nice idea for the transformer t1ck... It has a very mythical feeling...
|
this looks awesome. really really great concept.
|
Your project carries some kind of epical feeling with it. It would be wonderful, if you have time to do medieval clothes for the man, and a simple medieval environment for your final renders. Then we could see your robot in all his glory! I'm sure this will be a great thread.
|
cheers guys :)
I'm on with creating a bevelled 'in bits' version to have a go at a proper animated playblast transformation. Probably wont get a version running till the end of the week though. If I wasn't after the 'wooden transformer' then that would be a great idea jramauri :) |
Here's a quick blast of a transformation for the left side of the ship/body (the ship starts vertically). It's quite rough but shows where the idea is going. If I can get all the parts needed nailed down and transforming properly then its onto re-conceptualising the detail of the bot (and maybe some weaponry).
playblast1 |
Nice transformation. Where's the hollow part of the boat you can get in?
|
Cheers gohan, its just to see what bits I can use where. Now back to the concept board and put those into a funky looking bot :D
Luckily not all transformers have to work exactly like what they transform into, just look like it (hence the lack of underdeck accomodation) - or thats my excuse ;) |
Pretty nice transformation indeed. You seem to have the basic architecture in place. Now waiting for the modeling details and so on. Keep up the good work ;)
|
yeah, excellent work t1ck - looks like you are carefully thinking this through - are you still planning on using the sails as wings? I think that would look pretty cool!
|
thanks cris007, I wanted to get that bit sorted so I know what bits can be used where. There is still a bit of freedom with things popping out from inside which I will be needing for arms/weapons etc :)
thanks arran, I usually end up diving in too fast so this time its sit back and conceptualise lots before moving on. Yep the sails will still end up being wings though the base will expand out to make them look thicker and tougher :) Here's a couple more concepts. I'm trying to finalise the general areas of the bot before moving into more detail. The first sheet has the side/top views for the arms/legs I'll be going for. The second sheet is a few ideas for heads but there isn't anything definate yet. http://www.flash-fx.net/3D/images/tr...s/concept3.jpg http://www.flash-fx.net/3D/images/tr...s/concept4.jpg |
Great idea
I was thinking that having the ship be a flying ship is better than to have it be in water. It can be a bit more interesting and will be easier to transform than trying to have a boat go from being in the water to being a robot on land.
I like the robot drawings too. |
Tick
I love the junk boat idea, its very much a skiff thats similar to those of Jabba the Hutt in 'Jedi'- to let a secret out of the bag, I had the same idea for a vehicle (like a junker) in Outlaws a while ago, I have the sketch done just need to refine it then I'll put it in the concepts section on my site... Look forward to the rest Regards Jay |
thanks joe :) yep its gonna be a flying boat even though I like the idea of seeing a transformer coming out of the sea with water draining out of various places and maybe even a barnacle or two ;)
thanks Jay, great minds think alike eh? ;) let me know when you get the concept up and I'll have a look! Just been doodling a bit more on the bot concept. I think I know what I want, I just need to get some time to really nail it and put it down on paper. http://www.flash-fx.net/3D/images/tr...s/concept5.jpg |
good drawing tick! looking forward to seeing some 3d!
|
Basic shape concept is a little better (thinned the waist) so I've dived in and done a quick fill out in 3D to see if it is looking bulky enough. At the minute I'm preferring it without the shoulder pads and probably with some more 'ship' sections around the back of the calf area to bulk it out lower down but things might change ;)
Oh btw if you were wondering about weapons then he's more of a run in and do a bit of hand to hand combat type of guy :D Those shoulder pads could double up as a shield and/or weapon....hmmm... http://www.flash-fx.net/3D/images/tr...s/concept6.jpg http://www.flash-fx.net/3D/images/tr...ers/model1.jpg |
I kind of like the big shoulder pads - they give him a bit of weight if you know what I mean. Good concept sketches by the way. :)
|
the guy looks like mass steel. looks VERY heavy!! it can probably shake the ground heck loads.
great job t1ck |
thanks guys, he's gonna be wooden and steel (steel lower legs and a couple of other bits but mainly wooden).
I was away this weekend but got a couple hours playing done (on the train again) - even though I lost some time when it didnt save correctly - ouch! Here's the bot without shoulderpads so far. General detail needs adding to the head/arms/legs and then it'll be proper detail time :) Some influence on the shape is coming from a gorilla type look but the detail on the back is still going to stay quite blocky and not too organic. http://www.flash-fx.net/3D/images/tr...ers/model2.gif http://www.flash-fx.net/3D/images/tr...rs/model2a.gif http://www.flash-fx.net/3D/images/tr...rs/model2b.gif http://www.flash-fx.net/3D/images/tr...rs/model2c.gif |
I've been recalculating the pieces and how they will fit together and these are the parts that are dead easy to transform.
The shoulders now open up out of the main body. The other parts are like the first playblast test I did. I'm also still trying to hammer out the arm transformation process properly... http://www.flash-fx.net/3D/images/tr...ers/model3.gif |
Right, almost there with the actual parts and their specific places in both models.
It turns out to get the hands I've ended up with something more pincer like which I quite like. The thumb will move around from the stuck out bit on the hand though. Also the bottom parts of the legs will expand outwards to give more weight to the model. Once this bit is completed then its onto modelling each part in high detail and making sure there are hinges etc for the movements. Boat, all compacted: http://www.flash-fx.net/3D/images/tr...rs/model4a.gif Transformer, all expanded: http://www.flash-fx.net/3D/images/tr...rs/model4b.gif |
Looking good, I'm looking forward to seeing the transformation animated.
|
"Heavy Weight" (thats his name...lol) is still looking cool!!
|
yea really looking forward to seeing that animated how u get from a boat to a robot, is a must see!!! Good Stuff mate :)
