Hello,
I hope for this time to finish this contest. (I moved in Greece...)
I will remain in realism as regards the vehicule because I wish to make a video to integrate it.
It will be a jetfighter, the SUKHOI - S37. Here is a link to see some references of it.
I will post a sketch of the transformation soon.
First modeling step :

with the forward swept wing style your choice of aircraft to model as a transformer is spot on :)
reminds me of one of the decepticon planes - maybe make it a baddie?

I don't have done a lot in 3d part. I'm still searching a robot concept.

cgrein 15-03-2006 01:08 PM

Take a look at this site for some inspiration:

Great start kiveun! I am already seeing hints of starscream and skywarp in your model. Good luck in the challenge.

kiveun 15-03-2006 07:09 PM

cgrein => Thanks a lot for this great links. :attn:
I discover this cartoon. In France, i never seen an episode of this before.
arran => Thanks. I will take a look for starscream and skywarp on website cgrein give me. When can i see your entry for this challenge? ;) I always need more inspiration.

arran 15-03-2006 07:21 PM

Thanks mate - Tempting as it is, I think I am going to sit this one out as it is a little beyond me and I have lots to learn. Still, all of these great ideas and entries are making me think twice.

kiveun 16-03-2006 06:41 AM

I think that I will change starting idea...
I will try to start with a robot on which I would add parts so that it is transformed into vehicule...
I think that will be a little simpler...
I don't know ...:headbang:

kiveun 16-03-2006 07:18 AM

I find a good inspiration for transformations a jet fighter can do.

But i'm still not sure what i will do ...

I think i found a concept i like.
It's a mech which transform in a spaceship with a form who make think about an insect like a fly.
Sorry for this wonderful sketch i did :shakehead
Already I'm not good for drawing ... with a mouse it's catastrophic

t1ck135 16-03-2006 08:34 AM

cool :) this will be fun to model - especially if its a huge fly!

I have a little problem with renders ...:headbang:
When i render with mental ray I have a bug effect on some shape that i don't have in Maya Software render ...
Someone know how to resolve this ... ?
I'm modeling in Subds
Thanks for the help

Here is where i am for the moment :p
I still have this problem with MR unfortunately so i make Maya Software render...:headbang:

dilberts 17-03-2006 12:02 AM

kiveun, mental ray doesn't support subd's. Stick to regular polys and manually crease your edges by adding more lines where you need a tighter edge.

kiveun 17-03-2006 06:03 PM

Thanks for the advice Dilberts. I think i will stay in Subd's mode because it's a so easy way to make non-organic models :bandit:
I read in some forums that Turtle render Subd's. Maybe I will try it later.

papalatistudios 17-03-2006 09:25 PM

Dilberts - This quote was taken from the mentalimage website:

"Supported geometric primitives include polygons, trimmed free-form surfaces, hair (in mental ray 3.1), and subdivision surfaces."

Kiveun - Mental Ray does support Subdis. However it has problems with them just like it does with nurbs. The answer is the tesselation. You have to increase the tesselation factor. What you are seeing happening is Mental Ray trying to optimize the surface through tesselating. If it does not have enough value to tesselate properly then you will get what you are seeing. So adjust the tesselation value and you should be set.

I dont know about Turtle, but I do know that RMfM does do all surfaces. And not only that, it specializes in nurbs and subdis, because it ignores the tesselation values and renders it as smooth as possible. And you know how it takes forever for subdis to render, not anymore, with RMfM it is lightning quick.

Just a little bit of info.

kiveun 18-03-2006 11:28 AM

papalatistudios => Thank you. I will take a look in MR settings to see if i can add tesselate level.
When you say RMfM you mean Renderman for Maya?
Kevin

papalatistudios 18-03-2006 05:24 PM

Correct. The new fully integrated version for Maya.

joshlobo 19-03-2006 03:00 AM

wow.... very interesting...RMfM eh... cool!

anyway, Kiveun, i love ur concept. I have a vision of a swarm of ur transformers attacking some sort of predator. sweeeeeet!
