Please say anything that you think I should remake on this model.

ok, here is one from the side, been updated
1. the butt of the rifle has been remodelled(more smooth) 2. The sight has now been made much more realistic. 3. Main gun part has been more completely modelled... C&C welcome. bobalie |

And, another angle.
C&C please. |
can you show a wire.
do you know about the smooth buttton... |
haha, how do I screenshot?

nvm, i found a different way to do it.
Yeah, the smooth button was screwing up my UV's though. So i had to manually go in and use the Poly Cut tool. Im not really sure if I should have the butt of the gun smooth or blocky, because its wooden. Heres the wire |
If the Poly smooth is screwing up UV's you have to check the "Keep UV Border" option.
Looks good though. |

thanks, bobalie |
ouch, 4 people said on the poll "No, Go get a job."
I meant that as kind of a joke... |

here is a shot of the wireframe, been smoothed more
|
the smoothing wire dont look any good, try with only 4 sided faces
|
Well...I don't want to be rude, but it doesn't look very well. First of all try to finish your model before texturing it. Second, get yourself _very_ good references (google,...). Third, do easy things to improve your skills and increase them step by step. If you haven't done them yet, do the Maya Tutorials which are enclosed with the software. Try to keep your mesh as clean as possible. In my opinion you shouldn't do an AK-47 if you're new to Maya. I hope I didn't discouraged you too much. I'm sure with some practise in the basic skills you will post another AK-47 in circa two months which is much better. And the one after, is even better and so on...
;) Keep it up. |
My vote would be no, but not in the way you said on your poll lol.
Like everyone else said, use refs, make edgeflows good, keep 4 sided polys, finish model before you texture it. |
Yeah, maybe Ak wasnt the best idea for me...
I have done all the tutorials except for one which wouldnt work on my computer for some reason. I am also trying to make a TIE fighter, very simply. I have 3 pictures from google that I'm going to be using as skin(side-wing picture, front on picture, and from above) I have almost finished the UV map for the wings, but it is hard for noobs like me :). Angalid: Your meaning I should start out with 4sided geometry and then smooth to a better level? What do most people try to do as their first actual project(other than tutorials)? |
I haven't seen your tie fighter yet but I don't think you're already ready to texture it yet.
Make sure all the faces on your models have 4 sides. |
Im not texturing the model, not yet after what happened with ak(it sucked). Im just modelling, might not even texture, just have this one as a pure model to see what I need to differ in.
by the way, Gohan, what do you mean by "Make sure all of your faces have 4 sides."? do you mean; I have a cube, for example, and to get four sides for all of the faces, I just press the smooth button once and then each of the six faces now is made up of 4 themselves? |
No.
One second. I'll make you a screenshot. |
Ok, thanks

Here.
|
Oh, thats what you mean. Gotcha
what is the importance of that though? Easier use? or just looks better, lol? |
For starters:
1. When you smooth both of those, the one with 4 sides will look better. 2. Easier to animate. |
What should I try and make? Thats very simple?
|
You said, you have finished the tutorials coming along with Maya. Good !
Now search the net for other tutorials. www.learning-maya.com is a page which contains many tutorails sorted after their content: Modeling, Animation, Fluids, and so on. Search the site for any tutorail which is suitable and of which you think that you'll succeed. After you've done many of those tutorials start your own projects. Regards... Fubar. |
ok thanks fubar
|
are any of these free :) ?
|
Hm..they are all for free, aren't they?
Edit: This is a nice tutorial for example. It also gives you an introduction in booleans. http://www.highend3d.com/maya/tutori...lygon/239.html |
thanks man, I need more people like you and gohan :D
|
I am about halfway through the screwdriver one and it is helping a lot. Thanks Fubar. Do you have any other good tutorials?
|
I have a GREAT completely in-depth tutorial for modeling a car.
http://www.3dm3.com/tutorials/maya/car/ that is part one, there are 4 parts. Good luck, and be sure to post your screwdriver when you're done with it too! l8er, Matt :alien: |
Thanks man, I will try it

I'm pretty sure www.cgtalk.com has some tutorials by users there.
|
Fubar, or Gohan, in the screwdriver tutorial, what is a dgs_material? I dont have it in the section where I can add a blinn and lambert and stuff like that...
|

This is all I have, I really dont know what he means when he says dgs material... but here we go. also, for some reason I could only get about 3 of the circles to actually do the boolean, the rest killed my screwdriver... so I can only shoot from this angle

To make them invisible again do the same. If some normals are pointing into the object, select the faces which have wrong normals and go to: edit polygons->normals->reverse. That sould work...good luck. Edit: TIP: if you want to bool many parts (like the "holes" in your screwdriver) then select the objevts with which you want to bool and go to polygons->combine to make them one object. Then use the boolean tool. |
