Baby's head

1 Attachment(s)
After finishing the roman guy's head I decided to give modeling a baby's head a crack. The jaw area near the ear needs to be corrected. That baby in the picture is my daughter.

mmoore5553 27-05-2006 07:49 AM

looks like a good start. ...and very cute daughter ...I cant wait to see progress on this ...i liked your roman head

arran 27-05-2006 01:49 PM

Yeah, cute daughter - modelling that hair should be fun! :)

Looks like a really good start Minstrel - the proportions look great - this should be a cool model. The only thing that is bothering me at the moment - and I know you have just started - is the outer upper edge of the eye lid - the angle just looks a little off at the moment.

Minstrel 27-05-2006 04:59 PM

Thx for the comments...She is very cute :)

Arran, about the eye lid on the outside edge, can you elaborate on that a little more?

arran 27-05-2006 05:16 PM

Taking a second look, it actually doesn't look that bad - I think maybe the angle just looks a little flat.

Minstrel 27-05-2006 05:35 PM

Im going to try make it come closer towards the eye in the outer section and see how that looks.

Here is a small update. I started working on the eye texture. Pretty much done with the modeling part. I need to add a bit of flesh in the inside part of the eye sockets.

starjsjswars 31-05-2006 03:15 PM

LOL! i did that to my little brother who is 3 and my other brother who is 18

bobalie 31-05-2006 03:17 PM

Nice looking baby. Very smooth skin(the model).

MattTheMan 31-05-2006 03:53 PM

Yes, you are doing a Very good job, minstrel! But: tweak tweak tweak :p

Minstrel 31-05-2006 04:22 PM

LOL Starj...my brother is actually next in line for a CG bust. He forced me to take his pictures already.

I have been playing with hair lately...This is the big challenge for me with this one. The skin texture should be easy since I have a bit more experience on that after my previous head (the roman guy in the finished works section).

And yes, there will be more tweaking of the face itself to make this face more like the real thing.

Its been a long time since I posted anything in here so here is a small update. I tweaked the face and added a basic SSS shader. I have been playing with hair in the little free time i've had in the past few weeks but it is driving me nuts...ive tried hair, fur, dynamic hair, static hair, fur with dynamics using hair curves. Nothing satisifies me. I am puting hair on this model, so it may take me another year to finish this.

arran 21-06-2006 10:44 PM

good work minstrel - this is going to look cool when it is finished. Post up a few pictures of your hair experiments - maybe some of the experts can give you a hand.:)

More tweaking, hair is on hold. Here is a pic I took that I particularly liked.

More tweaking with the lights and the eyes. I also added a bit of the upper torso. Pretty much done with the modeling I think. I guess is going back to the hair now. CC welcome :)

Some small progress on the eyebrow and eyelashes.

JAY, thx so much for sharing that tutorial on the eyelashes...amazing!!! I had no idea you could do such things. That technique opens up a bunch of possibilities for other things. I'll probably redo the eyelashes, so easy now :)

I'll get back to the hair at the top one of these days.

starjsjswars 25-07-2006 10:13 PM

tut? whats the link?

arran 27-07-2006 07:46 PM

Great work minstrel! This is looking nice!

Minstrel

No Probs...glad to help

Jay

NeoStrider 27-07-2006 09:14 PM

between the last two pictures you posted (the last one without eyebrows, and then the one with eyebrows) it looks like the baby's head got scaled down a bit... did something happen, or is it just a trick with the perspective? i think the shape of the baby's head honestly looked better in the pic without the eyebrows...

starjsjswars 28-07-2006 04:38 AM

jay whats the tut you gave him, can i have the link?

Hey guys, thx for the comments, yes, I redid the shape of the head (it wasn't the perspective). The upper part of the head was too big (the forehead). I played some more with the eyebrow and eyelashes and I feel good enough about them to move onto the hair. But Im getting a little lazy.

tadpole3159 31-07-2006 09:18 PM

the hair looks crazy hard it's all messy in the picture how you gonna do that? i wanna keep an eye on this and see how you do :ninja:

eyebrow and eyelashes are "final". Hair on top is a test...im trying fur attached to a hair system to get some dynamics going. This picture below is one of the results. Im trying to insert a second fur system to fill in the spaces but im getting some strange results. I need to play more with it.

Trying some new things, experimenting with hair contraints, very neat stuff.

arran 05-08-2006 07:43 PM

Looking good minstrel!

At the moment I think the eyebrows are a little bit too strong. I think you need to thin them out a bit.

I like your hair experiments!

DJbLAZER 07-08-2006 01:46 AM

To me the eyebrows look to thin and sharp actually, like they have been plucked, and usually girls in that age doesn't pluck the eyebrows :) Make them a bit thicker but not so sharp, either make the color or the fur gradually fade out.

Minstrel 07-08-2006 07:25 PM

The issue with the eyebrows is right on the money, i played quite a bit to try to get the right density to it, and try to unsuccesfully simulate the fading using "custom equilizer maps". I did not think of fading the color to achive that effect, very good idea...i'll have to try that (perhaps mapping the opacity might also do the trick...). The good new is that I played with the lighting and amazing how changing the spot light (the main source light) to an area light completely changed the look. I'll post an image tonight but i am very pleased how the eyes really come out, as well as how much softer the eyebrows appear. My only issue with using area lights is that the shadows have some artifacts forcing me to crank up the number of rays coming out of the area light making rendering about 3-4 times longer than when using the spot light. I am using something like 55 rays...which is huge compared to the 15 i was using with the spot light, and the artifacts are still not completely gone (I'll have to go even higher to 60-70 rays). Not sure if there is a way to blurr the shadow to eliminate those artifacts without having to increase the number of rays...Any ideas?

I was out traveling and didnt get time to spend on this, but I finally came back home and experimented some more. I am finally getting the hang of hair. I'll try different styles and lets see where i get to.

I did tweak the SSS shader to soften it a bit, and also touched up the chin area. I found a couple of areas on the face that i will be tweaking shortly.

marlonjohn 29-08-2006 06:29 AM

ahaha looking really great with the hair... looks real

starjsjswars 29-08-2006 01:27 PM

can we see a close up with the backround white? looking sweet.

I finally think im done with the hair...I'll start working on the shirt and the skin (put a bump map in there and play with some colors).

I have played around with the redering for the past couple of days and I got it to a point that I am very happy with its quality. I need to finish up the shirt (put some disney picture in there or something), and do last touch ups on hair and skin texture...this is almost finished.

starjsjswars 06-09-2006 03:15 PM

I know this is called "babys head" but are you ever going to make the whole body?

Minstrel 06-09-2006 03:39 PM

hey starz, eventually I'll give the whole body a shot. But I want to move away from this project for a little bit and start working on a cartoon like character that I've thought about.
