swarovski crystal

hallo there! I can´t get the right material for a crystal shader. tried it with mr and maya shaders but all I get is a boring transparent object. googled the whole day but there seem to be very few tutorials for creating this crisp reflective effect when a light source hits the facetes from a diamond or something like that. also I´d be curious how to split the white source light into rgb after the light rays crossed the material and step out as caustics. right now the light is monochrome + material is lame = §$%&

any help is much appreciated.

Does that work?

Falott 26-07-2006 05:50 PM

hehe! thx. this is what I was looking for.

I saw that one after I created some diamonds a while ago.

I only reallly used a mentar ray dgs material and played with the settings and got the following pic.

I created the scene as I saw a animation of some diamonds dropping that someone did in mental ray and wanted to re-create the look of it (I didn't use caustics for the render as I didn't know how at the time).

If you want the material settings then give me a shout and i'll post them up.

heres the pic

whoa! material settings would be great! I tried with dielectric, but still not cool.

also what kind of light did you use? in case writing all settings down is boring for you, I would also take the scene itself to explore shader/light/rendersettings. :)

thx both of you!

Ill post the file up tonight, theres nothing special to it, it was just a mess around

Here you go, its in Maya 6.0

Hope it helps you out.

Falott 30-07-2006 11:46 PM

thx for your file! but could it be you posted the wrong one? cause there is a gravity field and rigidbody nodes but nothing like diamonds. ':)

MattTheMan 31-07-2006 12:24 AM

for diamonds why don't you use the following:

dialectic material

col white 180 value (hsv thing)

ior 2.41

but you will never get dispersion (like color streaks and such), you have to use Maxwell or Indigo to get that effect ;)

Falott 31-07-2006 01:07 AM

do you know a method of dispertion fake for mentalray?

I´ll try with your settings, thx!

MattTheMan 31-07-2006 01:39 AM

nope. far as I know it's not possible :(

Falott 31-07-2006 06:38 AM

I recently came across a site explaining a dispersion fake for mental ray in 3dsmax, but didn´t bookmark it. dang!

gster123 31-07-2006 06:46 AM

Whoops!

That will teach me to check the file first!

I'll have a look for it tonight and repost if you still need it?

Falott 31-07-2006 07:16 AM

still would be tremendous!

found the site

http://www.jeffpatton.net/Max7/

but cause of max has no node based architecture, it´s a bit hard to examine the shader network..

this is what it would look like

Falott 02-08-2006 05:30 PM

hey gster, hope you don´t mind asking me again - but would you like to send me your diamond scene?

gster123 03-08-2006 06:47 AM

Yeah man no probs i'll dig it out tonight (if I can find it!)

sorry for the delay, i've been busy and im useless at remembering things!

Falott 03-08-2006 12:09 PM

no prob, same with me. (not if I need something :))

gster123 03-08-2006 04:58 PM

Dude, if i've got this right, the rigid bodies are the diamonds!! I set up an animation for uni to see what they would look like animated!

Run the animation untill you get a nice frame then place your camera and render away. You should get some thing like I got.

Sorry about hte confusion I forgot that I did that.

Cheers

Hi I'm new to this forum.

As for dispersion:
the new version of l_glass shader has dispersion attribute, (I mean l_glass v2 beta version, not the 1.2 version) but boy it takes long to render!!!
Don't have time right now to play with it but you might try

Cheers

well actually I did the renderings with the l_glass shader. it´s a mighty one!

d_kin 30-10-2006 04:20 PM

Sweet! Could you please post some details about performance of this render: the render time, settings and of course your machine?
Thanks

Those are some very pretty renders Falott. What is the l_glass shader, and where can I get it?

here are screen grabs of some settings I used. all in all you can´t don wrong with l_glas cause it´s a fancy tool. the to get the most out of your renderings the light setup is crusial. the shader lives from reflections so I made a box with lots of spotlights to get the reflections I needed. tweaking the light setup it took me about 1-2 days I guess.

just play around and watch out for good lighting tutorials, cause thats many times more important than the shadersettings.

and the light setup. in the renderglobals i turned down the reflections/refractions to 4 cause more increases rendertime and doesn´t even look so good. less is more.

Falott 31-10-2006 09:26 AM

I forgot to tell - I added a glare shader to the camera output settings to make the highlights glow.
