Need your input...
Hi everyone.. just wanted to see what everyone would like to see for a real life realistic animal modeling tut. I was thinking something very challenging both modeling and texturing wise like a rhino, iguana or deep sea fish
List some other cool animals to help me pick=). Kurt |
Personally I think a rhino or the like would be very similar to the Oliphant we already have here. I would like to see something unusual myself, something like a Komodo Dragon.
|
id say something like an angler fish or a halibut just for the odd shapes and the slimey effect
|
You asked for it Kurt....
Duckbill platypus gets my vote - it's got the lot: bill, tail, webbed paws, hair (textured wet & dry) !!! Like j5ive says - rhino's are old hat. Keith |

I say go for something with a lot of detail in it both in textures and in the body itself. I have an affinity with cats, so would like to see one of those, but again, the only really seriously complex part would be the cryptic internals of the ear. You could consider insects. If you were going to go all out and make it hyper real, then all the bits of fine hair and chitin and the compound eyes etc could be challenging. |
I think a cat would be very similar to the yeti tutorial, maybe a fully rigged scorpian though it may have been done.
|
What about a tiger or a Zebra, something with some colour variation and different textures (nose, fur, whiskers) etc, this might make it an "Maya Unlimited" tutorial though, if you go down the route of fur and hair for dynamics etc.
Just a thought |
i was hoping a realism tutorial would come out some time in simplymaya. if you want something challenging then i would think something to do with fur would do it. such as these ppl here already stated. a tiger might be cool. like gster just said. lots of proportion and deformation to take care of.
just a question kurt. whats the average time it would take for you do make a entire tutorial project?. it also depends on what kind of progect it is but lets just say.. how long did it take for you do do the pirate ship? 2 weeks? |
Most time it takes between 2 3 weeks depending on the model and detail as well as textures.. Hard surface always takes me longer then organic due to having to keep everything claen and a flat.
Usally 1 week building the model next week recording it. again depends on the model and textures. Lion and trigers would be cool but other then the face not much detail.. I look into it it.. my puter can handel fur pretty well it only starts to flake when the fur get supper dence... I was thinking of a sea horse maybe. |
Giraffe it has an interesting body shape has fur and is unique. Or maybe a sort of ape, like a Gorilla or Orang-Utan. Hippos are interesting as well, all the fat folds, and shinyness of their skin.
But I'd definately be for something that lives on the land, since there is the sea creature tutorial already. |
maybe a human ancestor...
|
how about a charmelon????? they have scales, folds of skin, many diffrent colors, tiny spikes all over them, claws, and alot of other stuff to. :) here is a web site
http://images.google.com/imgres?imgu...start=29&tbnid |
perhaps a bat? I also agree with whoever said a chamleon. I used to have a jacksons chamleon, pretty interesting visualy.
|
Now to pose this question...will you be using Zbrush as well?
If so then, some sort of Lizard, Komodo, Chameleon. What about a turtle? now that would be cool Jay |
I'll look into z brush as well...
|
Bro..go prehistoric..
Like a giant sloth or.. eh.. Gigantophiticus...or how ever you spell it.. Maybe Arsinoitherium Or Macruechenia Ral stuff, but looks kick ass..and you still get a bit of creativity with it, since most of these things are preserved only in skeleton... Just my thoughts. :) G |
I would think an Aardvark would be quite a challenge :)
|
HEh..ardvarks roick..
i loved the one on Kingdom Hospital..." Do me a solid, and i'll do you a solid".. G |
Just wanted to see about this idea..
What about a werewolf or even with a cat head but one like in harry potter.... where its not over-built with muscle i love the look of it very diffent from the typical ones you see ...but at he same time i can do a realitic wolf or cat face add some human modeling as well as some fur. Would be a really oringaial look that i have in mind. Kinda like the lizard ardvark idea as well. |
a werewolf would be awsome, i was more of a fan of the van helsing one than the harry potter version. It seemed to wimpy for me.
|
i would like a hornet or something. A bald faced hornet looks nice
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bald-faced_hornet or a mantis?? http://www.akaflieg.uni-karlsruhe.de...n_auf_Hand.jpg |
i'd like to learn something with a wetness texture.
Also ZBrush would be cool! |
I'll narrow it down to a few and post up a poll tomrrow and see what everyone is leaning towards..
|
I'll hijack the thread a second because I know you read this Kurt. I'll take the opportunity to thank you for the latest Human basic tutorial. Learned quite a bit from it and it was really fun to watch. So thanks for all the time that went into the making of it.
Back on topic: All the suggestions sounds like fun to me. Get crackin' :D |
If you want to do something that's going for realism stay away from werewolves, giant sloths etc etc. What you need to do is get something that is real e.g. the cat idea. Then take photos and then the point is to match to the photos. There's no being lazy and saying to yourself "that'll do" when it's blatantly not matching up, with a fantasy creature it's much easier to get away with things that you couldn't with a real creature that you can see infront of you.
Just my 2 pence worth... I really should get some more tutorials done aswell... :ninja: A |
Thanks alan.. as normal you are right.... will, stay away from the fantasy this time...
|
OK... need to pick one from the list below.
Lioness hippo iguana mantis |
hippo for me or lioness as a close second
|
i think the mantis and iguana are too similar to the sea creature in terms of creation... the lioness has fur, sure, but it's everywhere. on the hippo there's only certain spots with concentrated stubble-type whiskers, which would help teach baldness maps or the like. although it wouldn't be as pretty, i feel the hippo would be the better choice for a tutorial.
|
I think i will do the hippo will start the model soon and get some updates up.. ty guys.
|
i am curious Kurt! :attn: Can't wait to see you first updates.
 |
awe... i'm too late aren't i.
I would suggest something like an octopus or squid. |
someone asked him that last time, but he ended up making the sea creature tutorial. but yeah a hippo would be cool.
|
I know im too late but
I was thinking that a gaint lions head jelly fish would have been a beauty, oh well next time may be
|
cool! A hippo would be great. I just started work on a rhino so it'll be good to see how yours turns out.
|
actually a werewolf would be pretty cool, especially if you delved into rigging and animation
|
i was thinking the same thing, except instead of a werewolf, why not learn how to do a movie-faithful version of the hulk? don't get me wrong i know how to model an over-bulging muscular human with a crappy haircut, but i mean GEEZ... that color of green is just beyond me... :P
(this is me saying a werewolf is too close to a regular humanoid model as-is.) |
meh i say you do somthing with hair\fur... that would help us all the most.;)
