polly mclaren f1-first car

1 Attachment(s)
this is my first car after learning basic maya its going to be a mclaren f1 im happy with the front so far but i imagin the amount of triangles will be a problem

updates will probably be slow-just started gr 10 so lots of catching up to do...

c&c welcome

problem

these two faces arent conected after some remodeling and its posing a major problem when converting to sub'd ive tried merging the verts but it doesnt work

any suggestion

forgot pic here...

i apologise if yo've tried this but as i read it you unsuccesfully tried to merge the verts to join the two parts of the car.

i'm guessing it's because you may not have combined the two parts of the car (found in polygon menu). you should then be able to merge the verts with no probs.

looking goood chap, mclarens one of my favs!

a lot of people seem to prefer grouping the different parts although not having tried it myself i couldn't really say the best way to model a car.

problems with sub-d conversion usually show up in the script editor at the bottom right. clicking on the hamburger type icon will give you a very lovely clue and remedy into why the conversion isn't happening.

hope this helps chap.

vin209 23-10-2006 10:22 PM

hmm, should have waited for the pic!

try cleanup in the polygon menu as it looks like you have a few too many faces in there. if you have highlighted just the two faces then that triangle area sort points to it being that maybe?

switch to wireframe and choose faces and you might be able to delete the extra face without the cleanup and merge the verts.

i'm sort of new to all this too and encountered similar problems recently so i hope this helps

24-10-2006 02:38 AM

i tried cleanup and thats what selected those faces so im kind of at a loss there but im gonna try some other stuff and probably start on the side tonight...

thanks though mclarens my favourite too for 7 years now

OK i fixed those faces but now i have a new problem these edges as you can see are not conected

im pretty new to maya so its probably an easy fix...

thanx in advance

time for the side...

c&c welcome so dont be afraid

Turbo Dan 24-10-2006 04:15 AM

the wire looks very messy, but it just takes practise to get better.

the first thing i would do would be to clean up and get rid of all your triangles, stay with 4 sided polygons.

if you need help on making any of them into 4 sided polygons just post a picture and well help you out

good point ill get on that before i start the side...

99GsTurbo 24-10-2006 05:07 AM

yes what turbo dan said is correct. Get rid of your triangles and make them 4 sided n-gons and also, try to make your mesh look even. the more even it looks the better ur results. if u have 2 close edges and then the next edge is far, u will get a irregular bump because its almost af if its trying to make up those edtra edges. The more even spread (Make it look kinda like a grid) it is, the better ur results

Keep up the work, its good to see more car modelers around. This looks like an interesting car so i would like to see how u come along. practice makes perfect so dont give up. good luck mate

heres the forgotten image:headbang:

I-Iybrid 24-10-2006 06:47 AM

A good way to test out how its gonna look finished, do a good smooth on it. Itll give you an idea on where you need more lines/creases, or where you need less lines/creases.

thanx hybrid ill try that out

minor update -added this hood thingy

alright as promised here is the shot of it dupped, combined, and converted to sub'd

24-10-2006 02:18 PM

im having trouble with the side i cant figure out the cuves prooerly and ive started over many times so im wondering what would be the best way to get that curve at the top of the door that runs down the whole car??

and the side

I-Iybrid 25-10-2006 12:53 AM

Looks like you have too much geometry on the door area. The less the geometry, the better your results will be, and the easier itll be working with later on.

im going to clean it up later i got bored so i started the back...

and herre it is all together so far...

watcha think so far?

I-Iybrid 25-10-2006 01:35 AM

Do a quick smooth, lets see how it is then...its still too much geometry tho, IMO.

25-10-2006 02:17 AM

1 Attachment(s)
coincidence?...?

i was gonna smooth anyways

i added a rough back lots of things to sort out still

heres the unsmoothhed and smoothed

btw wats imo stand for??

ill do a wire later

younglion 25-10-2006 02:26 AM

good start but you are rushing this car. there are some errors on the mesh for example the part where the wheel goes doesnt look round enough.
ru modelling from blueprints? and you will need a lot of ref images for this car. oh yea which model are you doing the f1 gtr or the f1 gt?

EDIT: I found a site for the car here you go http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z...1/default.aspx

NeoStrider 25-10-2006 02:39 AM

just to add my 2 cents worth, imo means 'in my opinion', more likely seen as imho, in my humble opinion.

Lok1 25-10-2006 02:44 AM

I would go back in and do alot of "cleaning up" on some of your more flat surfaces that you dont need all of that unnessasary divisions in. the form is there it just needs to be slightly cleaned up.

25-10-2006 03:19 AM

i do realize i am kindof rushing it and ya im working from blueprints but they suck im gonna try to find better blue prints and might have to start over :headbang:

younglion: its the plain old f1 lm only 3 left i the world so i figued id make another...

25-10-2006 03:51 AM

ok so in my search for blueprints i found some perfect koenigsegg ccr prints wich may be easier than the mclaren

if i continue the mclaren im gonna restart again because theres just too much cleaning to be done (unless someone wants to do it for me:p ) so should i

A) restart the mclaren and do it or

B) start a koenigsegg ccr from scratch

:headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

heres the koenigsegg for those that dont know

25-10-2006 06:11 AM

is there any tuts out there about laying out curves cause when i restart i wanna use nurbs either way...

gster123 25-10-2006 07:04 AM

Try to get one part perfect before moving on to the next part, youll learn more as well as keeping it nice and clean.

Theres the BMW z4 tutorial using nurbs as people in your other thread pointed out (or the Z4 tut here uses nurbs to polys then to sub D's)

pbman 25-10-2006 10:32 AM

hey,
i done the tut on the z4 on 3dtotal its in this section somewhere
it is a good tut but a little limited an u end up making ur own way 70% of the time but worth a try

personally i would restart the mcclaren as this will get u ready for later on in life wen u cant chose adiff car wen u r boss asks u for a ford escort an u give him a beetle

good luck though

Lok1 25-10-2006 12:41 PM

If you are going to start completley over... I would just start by making the basic shap of the entire car.. and just get it right to start with.... very genreal then go in once you have a clean shape and do your details.

27-10-2006 02:36 PM

hey guys finally home again

and realizeing some good advice from everyone:beer:

lok1, ill do what you said it sounds like a good idea:beer:

got a bit of my mesh cleaned up still looking a bit scary though and i got the basic look of how i want my spoiler to be
not like a mclarens spoiler but how my friend has his setup

the spoiler is not final there is still a lot of crap to sort out...:headbang:...

this threads really dead now so i might only post big updates from thus point forth

I-Iybrid 30-10-2006 06:00 AM

The front end is looking much better. The rear end still needs work, but Im sure you're aware of that.

30-10-2006 07:25 AM

its very basic right now just to get the idea of what im doing
