Winter Challenge!

Sports!

Yes, now is the time to dust off those sports fantasies as your challenge for the months of Nov-Jan is to create a sport-themed entry!

Some guidelines:

1) This is a modeling and texturing challenge, so those two tasks are required. The more you can do to present your entry, though, the better! If you want to rig and pose and create cool effects, I'm not going to stop you!

2) Your entry can be about ANY sport! Hockey, baseball, soccer, boxing... or, if you want to invent a sport, that's cool too! Futuristic! (Laser Polo anyone?) Wacky! (Hamster Olympics?)

3) The main idea is to create a character in the chosen sport. Be it a football player in full gear, a cyber jocky and his robo-horse, or whatever.

4) My biggest hope is that everyone takes the extra time that this challenge offers and create their character either in a pose playing the sport or in a sports arena of their own design or something really great like that! That's not required, however. (But sure would be cool!)

5) This is an extra long challenge because of the hollidays as well as my wedding in late January! I'll be getting back in Feb, so in order to handle everything, the deadline is February 10th!

6) All work must be done by the artist submitting. You may submit one entry.

7) There's no limit as to what software you can use to create your models and textures.

8) A finals thread will be created toward the end of the challenge. Finals should be posted there, with screens/renders of the final result.

If you have any questions, ask them here. Keep a look out for any addendums or additions to the guidelines as issues are brought up and answered.

The grand prize for this challenge, is a little different. Hopefully it's something that will be appealing to enough people to enter!

A signed copy of NFL Street 3 for the Playstation 2!

This was my first released game that I worked on and I'd really like to give a copy to a willing home. :)

(If the PS2 version doesn't float the winner's boat, a PSP version is also available!)

louis56 31-10-2007 04:11 AM

Mike, January?! Jeez, that's coming fast. Anyway, does it have to be a character doing something, or can it be a scene about sports?

mtmckinley 31-10-2007 11:02 AM

Feb 10th is the deadline.

Yes, martial arts is a sport.

marlonjohn 31-10-2007 12:49 PM

I cant wait to start this! though have to wait till i finish my stinking exams in 2-3 weeks. I've got my theme already, though ill try to plan it all out so that i don't mess up in the long run.

My theme is dodge-ball. (No stealing! :p Haha just kidding)

GOODLUCK ALL! :)

bendingiscool 31-10-2007 01:53 PM

hmmm dodgeball eh, lol just kidding, although that is a really cool idea. Not sure what sport I'm gonna have a stab at yet, glad about the extended time as will be able to fit around uni work now.

I'd prefer some kind of character work in the final, but what do you have in mind? Maybe it'll be fine.

It's crazy to me to think that by the end of this challenge, I'll be married! Wow! :) i've done so many of these challenges now and they seem to just fly by to me. I wonder if this one will too?

I was thinking of some sports equipment, but I need to spend more time thinking about it.

jali 31-10-2007 05:07 PM

sorry if this is a stupid question, but where on this forum do we post the entries, do we post them in the WIP section, or in the members lounge

31-10-2007 05:09 PM

This will probably be the first challenge ill enter and complete, im going for a bobsledder in full gear going down one of the icey raceways!

Funky Bunnies 01-11-2007 04:38 PM

ah get with the times, kinddog! he's been in the industry for a while now. Check his site ;)

*I didn't know as well... Grate stuff in that website!
*I think the last competition was better.

- I think that there's plenty of sports out there, and we don't need to go for ideas that are already taken... so far we've got two people modeling an aircraft, and two people going for martial arts.
Such a competition will surely do more harm then good to both sides, since instead of helping each other and sharing ideas, we'll keep them for ourselves and look for our own ways of being original.
Besides, two entries of the same kind won't look as good as one... hope some of you see where I'm going ;).

Besides the point that this challenge has many more entries (already) and looks much more promising.

anasasis 01-11-2007 06:24 PM

in my mind poeple arnt in these challenges to be overly competetive so i think its great that people share thoughts and ideas. and if some people are overly competeetive well go for your lives you dont have to post your ideas.

The subject for the last competition was more artistic, with a better potential for a good scene.
Some ideas can produce good scenes, like that Red Bull air race idea, but there isn't much of those, ( as in the last competition). But what difference does it make now anyway...

Weyu 02-11-2007 05:25 AM

I think it is a good choise as you can twitch and turn the subject to your favor. As the mountain said, you can do it with animals or something similar, so I dont think this competition restrains your creativity. :)

And well you have to keep in mind that 40-60% of the ones that enters the competition does not complete it so we will see which one is most popular at the end.

mirek03 02-11-2007 02:52 PM

i hate sport, in Australia its all football, blah, blah, homophobic homoerotic bully boys with toys, short pants and lots of body bumps.., (now ill gets lots of hate mail )

i like the idea of air racing though.

what about a go-cart race or interplanetary polo match of the gods??

sport!!! well mike, thats a swear word in this house.

congratulations on the wedding.., you must be very happy.., as the song goes (or one should) .., 'when you're in love, the whole world smiles at you.'

lol...
Say you hate footy in aus and you'll get stoned by a crowd of angry bogans. i used to not like it much but after the grand final i started to sorta get into it.

THX1138 04-11-2007 08:21 PM

Man I really want to enter this one, but the busy holidays are comming up at my job, and although we have about three months to work on this, I might just give it a shot.

Mabe Mike's Lazer Polo idea would be a good idea, but how would that even work?

s2-speedy 06-11-2007 07:15 AM

quick questions - is paintballing considered a sport? If so i might do it. :)

mtmckinley 06-11-2007 01:36 PM

sure, sounds like fun to me

Swil 07-11-2007 10:25 PM

Hi Mike,

Just a quick question to make sure .....

I have entered this competition with the idea of the Alice in Wonderland white rabbit playing golf.

I'm assuming a rabbit falls in the category "character" - agree ?

s2-speedy 07-11-2007 10:35 PM

Id presume u can do a animal as a character - as mike said for an example, hamster olympics - and im planing on modelling a rhino 4 my character so it should b ok. :)

mtmckinley 08-11-2007 12:36 AM

yeah that's fine. looking forward to it!

anasasis 08-11-2007 09:11 AM

hey i had an idea of doing like a sport televised on like a 3d television set and people and like a ball coming out of the tv into a guys lounge room would this be ok

mtmckinley 08-11-2007 07:37 PM

sure, if you do the work that's seen on the tv and not use an image from some place else

anasasis 09-11-2007 04:36 AM

thanks heaps

TheFourRiders 29-11-2007 11:21 AM

I haven't been here in months, but now I'm back (for those that even might have the smallest idea who I am). I think I'll try something out for this... this is my first challenge, and I have needed a project to do for a while now. I'm thinking I'll do something like underwater archery (though that is subject to change), with some sort of special targets. I'd still consider myself somewhat of a beginner, but I'll give this a try (though I might be busy over the next 3-4 weeks).

TheFourRiders

mtmckinley 29-11-2007 12:21 PM

looking forward to it!

bigtommyb 05-12-2007 01:27 AM

ok - kool i think i will give it a go i always have problems coming up with ideas so this will help me! i think mines gonna be go-kart themed... its motor sports after all!

Mayaniac 15-12-2007 08:53 AM

OK this is going to seem really stupid... but i thought i might ask anyway

Could my entry possible be based on a Board Game???

I'm not going to model the actual board, but rather bring the Concept of the Board game to life in a "Real" sport.

Such as the board game 'Battle Ships'...... :D

Let me know!
