Amoeba - summer challenge
I decided to join since it would be good practices for a newbie to maya like me. :)
I'm part of an Astronomy club, so I see it fitting to model a telescope...and of course, 'abandon' it for a few years. (Reference to summer challenge). I'll upload 1 or 2 images of the "reference"-telescope tomorrow. :) |

OK, here is one of my reference images (please excuse he fact that it is night, and the room is poorly lit...)
Anyway, I lowered the quality so I can upload it here (don't have an accounts on image-uploading sites.) |

you have a telescope... dude, you are awesome  |
^I acctually flipped it, but preview (a mac proram, the windows equivelant is Windows FAX viewer (I believe thats what it is called)) didn't save it that way. I still have to install GIMP (moved computers) so I couldn't really have better quality then this...
Oh, and the telescope is my familys...we where interested in stars & planets, and in the end that got me in astronomy club. :) |

OK, here is a pic of the progress...was busy with homework, so I only get satrted on the leg so far.

A bit more progress...
|
looking good :)
what happened to that screw from the prior post? |
Oops...
When I took this screenshot, I forgot to un-hide the screws layer (since one of them has a lot of polys, so the comp wouldn't lag very early in the process.) Thanks for the compliment though! :) |
ah right,
so how you putting it all together if your computer complains when you show the screw layer? |
Putting it together is not a problem...
the problem is, one of the screws uses WAY too many poly spheres that have flattend...I was going a bit, "over-the-top". im goin to redo the screw once I finished the batch render currently running... ;) ' PS: Will you join the summer challenge too, Chirone? |
the screw is just a series of flattened spheres?
maybe you should have lofted something out of some curves, might reduced your poly count? |
Ok, I'll do that once the last 80 frames have been renderd! :)
Chirone, are you joining the challenge? |
i got scared off from Joopson's rapid progress, and BennyK's fridge! :p
i may still join in though... wont be as fancy as their work though  |
amoeba try a helix for your screws, just adjust the attributes and it can easily look like a screw but with a lot less polys.
Chirone , don't be scared to enter. No one is going to laugh and it's really about the experience you gain from taking part, I always learn something when I take part in a challenge. |

Quick render...
|
is it me or is the cross thingy a bit thin?
i'm talking about the thing that connects the tripod legs... i should probably know the name but i dont... |
Matches my refs...
It's exactly the width of one of the wooden beams connected to it. ;) |
i just thought the center should be more fatter...
meh... it looks like it's coming along really nicely :) oh an, love the new look (your avatar picture) |
Mmm..I just checked out some of the pics of other telescopes, and you are right, some of them really have a fatter middle. Matches the one Im modeling now, but thanks for the heads up!
BTW, do you know what my avatar is? (I know, random question, but I was just wondering if you acctually know 'it') |
hehe... no... no idea what it is, it looked like an amoeba though :p
or is it a lens of some sort? |
I'm not sure but it reminds me somewhat of Terminator...
Nice work on the model ;) What's your poly count? Benny |
Poly count is unberably big... :(
im at 113741 because of those stupid screws... :( It's going to get lower towards the end when I change them. And the avatar is HAL 9000, look on wikipedia. ;) |
i'm no expert on poly count but i say thats abnormally high for what you have there ;)
oh well.. make evry poly count i say! you should post a wire :) and i was right about the thing being a lens, although i didn't know where its from, i know now :alien: |

Is there any way to attach more than 1 image per post?
Anyway, here is the polycount-problem: :( |
113,741 ????? !!!!! OMG
is it faces? That's unbelievably high... How much do you have without the screws? And I thought I have a high poly count... Mine's ~7,600 faces Definitely post a wireframe Benny EDIT: 1 minute late... You can use an image hosting site such as imageshack.us |
i think you can post more than one pic at a time if you have a website or an image depositing site like what BennyK has with image shack
then you can just use the IMG button when you make a post anyway, that screw's wire looks uber dense... looks more dense than it needs to be i think (again i'm no expert on poly counts) and yeah, is that poly count counting from the triangles or faces? |
Try using a cylinder with a bump map instead of your screw.
the details are to small to be visible anyway. based on the wireframe this should send you ~20,000 faces back per screw Hope it helps, Benny |
How can you make so accurate guesses?
Its 23000 tris. |
Ok, now it 46000 tris...still alot to change...
|
it doubled in half an hour?
|
nice job so far. :)
|
Thanks arran! :)
And chirone, that was meant per screw, not the whole model. ;) |
oh right...
WOW  bennyK was pretty close.... |
still too much for the screws..... will you even see the detail of the screw? if not just texture it on, or bump-map it
|

How about some progress??? (That goes for you too, Joopson. I haven't seen any since the deleted bloom version in Oblivion) BTW, What's tris anyway? |
tris = triangles
OpenGL creates things in triangles. Tirangle strips, fans, and all sorts of other things one face, provided it's only got 4 edges, has two triangles to it |
Posting progress soon...
been a bit busy with other stuff.... :) |
aww, i thought there were updates to the model posted!
oh well, i know how it is to be busy >_< |
