Hi guys, my entry for this comp, Is going to be a beast of some sort. I'll be trying to model this in nurbs (yeah right) Its my first attempt at a patch modeling. So most likely will end up as a POLY....

doodle 07-01-2003 03:05 PM

what are the diffrences in modelling in nurbs and poly?

brian_ellebracht 07-01-2003 03:07 PM

What are the differencesmight be easier to ask what are the similarities rather than the differences.? lol
Brian
BTW Kurt, thats a really good start, only think I would say (I know it is way early on, but I would just point out the chin. Keep up with the updates.

Ok about 9 hours into it, Got a little upset at the nurbs patches not aligning right so I just turned it into my first love POLYS. Good thing is it still kept most, if not all the detail I had in the patch model.

-<{ JB }>- 08-01-2003 03:05 AM

LOL. Poly's are just so EASY to work with!!

Nice progress for only 9 hours!!! I look forward to seeing more.

Nice work Kurt! Keep it up!

undseth 08-01-2003 10:42 AM

The models is looking WAY great Kurt!

gazzamataz 08-01-2003 11:15 AM

Excellent model with good detail Kurt. He looks like Cardinal Wolsey (NOT CARDINAL FANG from Monty Python) with pointy ears so very Tudorish.

Nurbs can be tricky to model with, you have to get your mind around them. Although most sources say that there are better for modelling non-character types and that polys and Sub-Ds are better for this.

The only thing that puts me off of NURBS is texturing them - it's seems like a right pain in the *rse! Are you going to texture this model Kurt?

Kurt 08-01-2003 02:26 PM

Thanks guys... gazzamztaz im going to try to texture him, but that my weak point still....

Attached the ears. still pulling out detail on the top of the head. Than off to the body=)

gazzamataz 08-01-2003 04:21 PM

Kurt is this model two separate halves instanced across the ZY axis or are you duplicating the side just for rendering?

Kurt 08-01-2003 04:42 PM

Just duplcated the side for a render. I only work on 1 half at a time....

raul 08-01-2003 05:49 PM

eaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahh.. holly cow!!

that gave me a heart attack!!!. now thats what i call REAL modeling. great detail. dont ever stop. boys got a future.

Raul.

brian_ellebracht 08-01-2003 06:24 PM

Raul... I need a job before I can have a future =)

Just a update started the body. Still thinking what kind of feet he should have. Im playing with the idea of a hoof on a horse or maybe a rhino's foot.....

dbirider 08-01-2003 08:08 PM

or a big elephant foot! haha.

wow, that is freggen amazing :) how did you learn maya so good? just from constant practice, or from videos and tutorials, or a school?

Garry1953 08-01-2003 08:13 PM

Just keeps getting better and better.

Kurt 08-01-2003 08:23 PM

dbirider... I took a 9 month course in maya, and learned the basics there. I've been out of school now for 9 months and all I do is practise and read as much as I can.

chan_345 09-01-2003 01:10 AM

Kurt, that is awesome. wish i could model like that.

dbirider 09-01-2003 01:12 AM

woah... where did you take that course? Also, how would you rate the place you went to?(good, bad, worth it, not worth it)

after i graduate from high school nexed year, i want to take some sort of course for maya(possibly on the opposite side of the country at gnomon).. so im just trying to figure out where alot of people go to take maya courses.
:wow: :bgreen:

Kurt 09-01-2003 01:39 AM

I took my course at the Internatioanl Academy of Design in Toronto Canada I know there is a few Academy od design schools in the US also. Its was pretty good they teach all the aspects of animation and post production you would learn all the basics than its pretty much up to you to get good at what areas intrests you the most. I was worth it for me I love 3D animation Aaand MAYA. I was also a teachers assistant for a bit after I graduated.

MKess007 09-01-2003 02:50 AM

That is looking awesome! You though about texture yet?

Kurt 09-01-2003 02:57 AM

not quiet yet im thinking maybe brown skin tones...

-<{ JB }>- 09-01-2003 03:13 AM

:wow: wow :wow:

what about something more odd for colour - like a dirty blue or something.

Kurt 09-01-2003 03:18 AM

sounds good i'll have to play around with it once i get to that point...
