"Bits" For a Character

1 Attachment(s)
Hey Guys,

Long time no post when it comes to WIP's. Been really busy.

I'm gonna start to post up some progress of a new character, its gonna take a long time as i'm only doing a couple of hours here and there, got the concept and the refs need to get on with it now!

Gonna be unveiling him in bits as they progress, as I think it sort of best fits the idea.

Heres the first part of it, his spine, it wont all be on display but some of it will so I modeled most of it anyway. Need a tweek here and there to add soem variation but thats not going to be a problem.

arran 10-11-2008 07:00 AM

looks like a nice start mate - is this going to be your cenobite?

will be keeping an eye on this. :)

gster123 10-11-2008 08:13 AM

Could be mate, could be.....

Jay 10-11-2008 09:56 AM

Oh christ that brings back some severe memories of my last job at the studio.

I had to do a full human, inside an out....the worst part was actually the spine with vertebrae and cushions between them...

good luck on this Steve I'll be watching with keen interest!

Jay

gster123 10-11-2008 10:42 AM

Cheers man,

I actually enjoyed modeling the spine, thats straight from maya. I did a little X-ray turntable with it too, just for the hell of it, looks pretty sweet, might post it up on youtube.

Sure we've not been modelig nthe same stuff?? DNA, spine.. haha!

Whats the stuff for, when's it on?

Jay 10-11-2008 10:46 AM

Its a series on discovery channel (Im led to believe) I cant give the title until I know the release date. I was pretty much the only modeller on the show. The other guys started doing small insignificant stuff toward the end but I did the bulk of it.

Talk about pressure, but no diamonds

You're actually modeling the spinal cord. If this is going where I think its going, this will really really cool :D, good luck with this.

gster123 10-11-2008 10:53 AM

He,he, not too sure how much you will be able to see at the end of the day. Think hellraiser, clive barker sorta stuff.

Gen 10-11-2008 11:02 AM

Yeah that's what I thought, I love the Hellraiser stuff :D

Bashed out a brain for him too.

Only done the top part as thats whats going to be on show so to speak.

Jay 10-11-2008 10:45 PM

Cool Steve

If I may make one comment toward the brain, which does look good, and thats just to make the brain lumps smaller and more regular for added realism...

just my usual 10p...

Jay

gster123 10-11-2008 10:47 PM

No probs Jay!

Most of the time your 10p's are worth a £1 anyway!

Think I might just do that at a later date dude, want to get everythign toghether in the basic guide then i'll refline later on.

Jay 10-11-2008 10:50 PM

Thanks Steve

Cool mate well its looking good so I'll be around if you need help or have a zb question or whatever....

gster123 10-11-2008 11:11 PM

Cheers man, I'll check it out later on today.

Got my new copy of MB 09 thorugh with maya 09, not installed it as yet as it might conflict with the mocap suit that we've got, what with the plug in's etc as there were some issues with extention 2 of motionbuilder 7.5 and it.

I'll install it and and have a look probably the start of next week.

murambi 11-11-2008 02:12 AM

never seen what your capable but just from the start i can tell you really know what your doing

Thanks Murambi

Just added a head/torso and started to position it about to get a feel, looking forward to the sculpting part.

arran 11-11-2008 04:59 AM

mmm... brains. did you use the blob brush? it makes great brains.

gster123 11-11-2008 08:24 AM

Nah man, ma fave, the clay tubes love it. Though will give it a blast!

Jay 11-11-2008 08:42 AM

Cool Steve I was going to suggest clay tubes for it earlier, its great for hair too!

Jay

Mayaniac 11-11-2008 01:34 PM

Looks good man!

Base mesh look nice and clean... Should be a blast to sculpt!

Have fun!

gster123 12-11-2008 02:46 AM

Cheers Steve,

Looking forward to it myself! Just preping a few more parts in maya. Just so I can get a basic overview of the character and see how its all fitting then I'll start the sculpt. Though the temptations there now to just dive in with the o'l tablet!

Trying to monitor myself on this as I dont really have much time on my hands to do it, so I dont want to go over work again.

Cheers

Steve

Update, getting a feel as to where bits are going to fit in the overall scheme.

The hands look a tad small, probably will beef them up a bit when it comes to the sculpt

Mayaniac 12-11-2008 10:50 AM

Hey Steve.

Look solid so far!

Got any concept sketches (that your willing to share) for comparison?

gster123 12-11-2008 08:46 PM

My concepts, haha, there aweful mate, enough for me to get me idea down but no where near good enough to post up!!

Just starting to define areas now with the clay tubes to get feel for the definitions, muscles etc etc.

Mayaniac 16-11-2008 04:27 AM

Looks good. Don't forget to build up the top of the chest, with the clavicles, and such.

Really looking forward to seeing how this turns out, surprisingly there's not that much of this type of work out there.

gster123 16-11-2008 01:38 PM

Cheers Steve,

Yeah just working on the head/neck mainly at the moment, I'll switch to the body soon though to get overall proportions.

Yeah when I started to gather reference I was surprised myself that there wasn't more.

Bit of an update,

Mayaniac 05-12-2008 08:11 AM

Looks good. I like the shader.

The only issues I see is with the anatomy of the face itself. I know your going for a post death skin on bone look, so there's no problem there, but I think the bone on the side of the eyes should be brought in slightly. it shouldn't be so round, and also the check bone should extend back to the ear.

I really like what you did with the mouth (or lack of one). Looks cool. But the image is good, but isn't overly creepy in any way. I wonder if maybe you gave the face a bit of contortion, make it looks as if he/it was trying to scream. Try to channel some emotion through the eyes. Some character? Know what I mean? I think it would really solidify the character.

Anyway, everything else looking good thus far.

gster123 05-12-2008 08:19 AM

Cheers for the crits man, When I read over our post and looked back at it it stood out straight away as being wrong! One of the great things of posting up WIP's

Think its the old problem of being too "close" to it and having a bit too much fun going a bit mad when sculpting and not grounding yourself!

I'll get some non symetric stuff in there to spice it up a bit. As for the "expression" i'm not to sure as a lot of the cenobites look kinda "normal" in there expressions, like there not bothered i na way, sort of acceptd their fate, but I know what you mean. Might get some gaffer (duct) tape over my mouth and get infront of the mirror for facial refs, and see how it goes on a layer.

Cheers for the comments.

Edit - Ohh if you want the shader give me a shout.

Jay 05-12-2008 06:41 PM

Steve

Looking very cool mate, I love it. If you could add some more flesh to the cheek areas to define those areas it will really begin to pop mate.

best
Jay

murambi 05-12-2008 06:47 PM

skin looks leather-like material other than that it looks sweet

gster123 05-12-2008 08:42 PM

Cheers Jay an murambi.

The skins meant to be like that, im not after a real skin like material, I want it to look "dehydrated" so to speak, I can dial it up or down as its on a layer.

marlonjohn 06-12-2008 03:58 AM

Love the look of this so far Steve! :D

My 2cents would be, adding a bit more meat around the lower eye's.

Gen 06-12-2008 10:23 AM

Looking good so far. Hopefully you add that odd touch of eroticism along with the creep factor.

gster123 07-12-2008 04:12 PM

Cheers guys,

Yeah Gen I will on the "clothing" leather, buckles etc etc .
