Windows 7??

What? never heard of it!

i've never even used Vista yet!

...but didn't Vista just come out yesterday? I feel like i'm falling behind the times.

gster123 07-01-2009 04:41 PM

Yup been in the pipelines for a bit now.

Its pretty much a response to vista being dogged with problems when it first came out. I've only used vista on virtual machine and I didnt really see that much of a problem with it once you get used to it. Though thats not really a prelonged test in all honestly.

Some of the features on windows 7 looks pretty good, reading an article about it, it seems like its lighter than vista and faster.

I'm running XP and have no thoughts of going to vista unless i'm forced in some way.

BennyK 07-01-2009 06:04 PM

I'm doing just fine with XP right now but I've heard Microsoft redeemed themselves with this one... It's supposed to be everything that Vista was supposed to be in the first place...
But we'll just have to wait and see for ourselves :D
Benny

gster123 07-01-2009 06:37 PM

Yeah aparantly Benny, thats the blurb.

Think though I'll wait till its been out for a bit till I upgrade.

AnthonyCg 07-01-2009 07:59 PM

I dunno. Sounds like it may alienate a lot of vista buyers.

alexanderH 07-01-2009 08:39 PM

it looks like MAC OS.

gster123 07-01-2009 11:13 PM

I was waiting for that.

Thats like saying maya looks like 3dsmax.

that one car look like another cos its got 4 doors

elephantinc 08-01-2009 12:38 AM

Well now that you mention it most cars do look similar :p

MS lost me with Vista and im glad i switched

(correct me if im wrong but..) Windows 7 doesnt look like it has anything that mac osx hasnt got....

gster123 08-01-2009 01:34 AM

Blue ray maybe?? every new hardware upgrade, not form a short tied list?? ability to resize windows form every corner??......

Oh wait thats just XP or vista......

What do you see in windows 7 thats alredy in OSX?

elephantinc 08-01-2009 01:38 AM

Ill give you blueray but thats not really a software thing, more a hardware thing (so a mac issue as opposed to a good windows thing)

The last one is quite useless and insignificant but there is a much better hardware selection for pc's....

But lets not make this a mac V pc thread....

gster123 08-01-2009 01:47 AM

Yes lets not turn into a mac Vs PC but asking a question like you did with "(correct me if im wrong but..) Windows 7 doesnt look like it has anything that mac osx hasnt got...."

Yawnnn, lets wait till it comes out and see how many mac peeps bang on... which they will....

As you said lets not turn it into a Mac Vs PC debate.

I would beg to differ on the resizing windows, I use it all the time on differing setups as I use all the screen with multiple windows open at once, so messing about with one corner would be a pain (it is if I have to use quicktime)

Lol I thought I was the only one that got annoyed by that, some might consider that small potatoes, but its actually quit annoying when you multitask.

i'm soooo glad i'm not the only one who gets pissed off at the lack of being able to resize the windows from any bar
seriously, it's a pain in the ass having to drag the mouse all the way down to the lower right corner just to resize the window a bit so you can fit everything into one screen because of the lack of window switching that mac has.
i hate using the little hot spots in the corner of the screen for application and window switching, it's SO disruptive of the workflow
i don't know how you mac users can manage having to take 6+ seconds just to switch between two windows as opposed to 3. may not sound like much to you guys but if you're doing some serious work you'll find having to move the mouse when both hands are working comfortably on the keyboard

The Architect 08-01-2009 08:05 AM

Is the "are you really really really sure you wanna do that" dialog still around? :p

Chirone 08-01-2009 11:01 AM

well you see, to prevent people from stopping the user account control from being turned off they will make it harder to turn off

Theres something in windows 7 that organises the windows together, so it sets it up nicely.

It also has encryption enabled for external storage, (pretty good for government people leaving USB sticks with everyones info on in a pub).

Home networking setup's been streamlined so it can see any other windows 7 PC on the home network off the bat (if you want it to) so no fiddeling about, as well as streaming media from one PC to another. That is if you want it to.

On the blue ray side its native to the OS being able to read/write to it so theres no 3rd party software, so it is a good windows thing.

On the window resizing with the inclusion of hi res monitors not having the ability to use all the sides/corners is a pain, I thought I was the only one who uses it all the time.

using f9, f10 and f11 and can quickly switch through windows and have access to the desktop, i really miss it on windows

So what is actually new in windows 7

Chirone 08-01-2009 11:46 PM

yes i know that, and with the flat aluminium keyboards you just hit f3 or control f3 or fn+ those f9 f10 f11 keys
(which brings me to a point about those funny keyboards... why not make them devoted keys like you get on microsoft keyboards?)

but, when the window i'm switching to was the last one i looked at windows's alt tab wins here

i have to say, having the button as f3 is a lot better since the left hand is on f3 anyway unless you're using your mouse with the left hand, although you can't use the key as f3 unless you push the fn key (again, why not make it a devoted key?)

as for windows 7 i expect at the very least windows explorer wont be as bs, and be upgraded to how it was in windows xp... or have that option.... (i dont quite understand why they would downgrade to Mac's Finder layout, you can't go up in the folder heirarchy unless it was open before)

Theres quite a bit new in it, Ive put up a few bits that are new to it, do a bit of research.

Direct access to the desktop thats a feature in windows 7.

The Architect 09-01-2009 10:17 AM

"Direct access to the desktop"

Whats that?

gster123 09-01-2009 10:19 AM

If youve got lots of windows open at the same time and you want to access the desktop for whatever reason you click the bit between the clock and the edge of the screen to go to it. Rarther then minimising many windows.

The Architect 09-01-2009 10:34 AM

Isn't that basically what the "show desktop" button does? And thats been around since... a long time... (can't remember if ME or 98 had it) :p

09-01-2009 10:36 AM

yea, the show desktop button does that... and it's been around since windows 98, as an alternative you could aways right click the taskbar and cllik "show desktop" too...

elephantinc 10-01-2009 11:01 AM

on my mac f3 doesn't do anything and f9 + f10 +f11 are devoted

The improved home networking sounds good (if it works) because its such a pain at the moment

honestdom 10-01-2009 11:46 AM

I'm not bothered about the mac pc thing, but it seems as tho all windoze 7 has is a dock and widgets.
I think what everyone wants is reliability and speed. So if it has that then its cool.

I've got a Hofner 500/5 to sell and when i do, i'm buying a pc. the only reason is because they are cheap.

I find widgets on my mac great, i can look at my gmail account, monitor memory usage, cpu usage etc, read the mactips.com blog and read the daily dilbert comic.
You can do similar things with vista widgets, cant you?

Chirone 10-01-2009 09:25 PM

probably, but it's not as cool as the mac widgets where you pusha button and you get an overlay with them

like i said, i never used them...

murambi 11-01-2009 10:27 PM

well i read somewhere that it does real time renders on the processors instead of the gpus but it wont be as fast gpus

and also it has dx 11 which really sucks coz i just shelled 500 bucks on a dx 10 card ...it really is imposible to keep up with technology

Renders on the processors? Doesn't Vista use the GPU for Aero? I doubt MS would go backwards on this (even though they go backwards on other things).

murambi 11-01-2009 11:07 PM

i cant remember what terms they were calling it but they even did benchmark tests on some recent games ofcourse they had pathetic frame rates will do a google search and post the link when i find it again
