Spaceship Challenge: Earthling Millenium Falcon

1 Attachment(s)
Afternoon everyone. I have given this project alot of thought and wanted to join in. I am looking forward to it. I am not very creative in coming up with my own design of a ship. But would like to model the Millenium Falcon from Star wars. I found alot of good reference material for it. It took me some time to just figure how to approach this. I have gotten a start, not much of one for sure, and here is a picture of what I am using as reference right now.. I am probably in way over my head, but I think maybe I can do some kind model in the time. And look forward to texturing it. And if not it will keep my mind busy through May!!

Thanks for the chance to join in!

And where I am at now. Noticed in the Occlusion that the steel plates need to be lowered some, they are up too high. Back to work!

I have edited the picture as I had forgotten to turn off that geometrycast GI on, kind of made it look yellow.

My mates just started this in 3d Max - here is a bunch of ref he found - plus there is 100`s of google images out there - good luck, - its a good start

Good to see you're joining in Tom, I really like all your cars you've done that I've seen so I'm sure you'll do a great job! And a fine choice of ships to do too! Good luck with it, I'll be looking forward to seeing how you get on with it.

oldhippie_tom 12-04-2009 02:16 AM

Tweetytunes, thank you for the links and I will sure use them. But the site I found have 100's of pictures taken of the original 36 inch and 5 foot models used for the movie and I am sure that will be enough, as at some point you have to say that enough and you have to finish it. I have a hard time finishing, as I always see something else I could (or should) do. We are fighting the clock, huh? ;-)

Dango, thank you!!! And I surely enjoyed watching your project last month. I see you have a desire and that you strive to always do your best. It is nice to see your work also

Good afternoon. I know it has been awhile since I have updated, but trying to figure some things out. But seems we all are doing that. We really have alot of differe3nt styles in this, and I believe that is what makes it so interesting. It is alot of fun!!!

Should be done with the front soon and then start on the back. Trying to get the harder things done first and try and pace my time.

Have a good evening!!

Dango77 14-04-2009 08:51 PM

Excellent! Looking really good so far Tom, I'm liking all the detail around the sides, and as star wars is probably the film I've watched most throughout my life I'm enjoying watching your progress. keep it up! :)

Chirone 14-04-2009 09:09 PM

i've only seen starwars when i was a little kid, so i don't really remember much... i remember the x-wing in a swamp, those little midget bear things (ewoks? there was a cartoon about them i think), the light sabers, and a ghost of yoda, oh and the death star, and those giant thinks of big long skiny legs, oh, and the mechwarrior thingys

i don't even know what the death star is for, and i didn't know about this whole darth vader being luke's father until i saw all some programs referencing it

and i didn't know luke and leia were siblings until i saw someone mention it on another program...

one day i'll get those movies and watch them though....

anyway, that's some awesome work there... did you actually model all those little bits and bumps on the side there or is that a map? because if you actually modelled it then.... you are the man

oldhippie_tom 15-04-2009 02:28 AM

Chirone, when Star wars first came out in the theater I went as I had nothing to do. No one knew of it or what it was about at the time. The theater was almost empty. But within a week you could not get ticket. Sorry to go on. Thank you for you nice comments on my work.

The stuff that runs around the middle of the ship is a displacement map. Yes, feels like cheating. But we only have so much time, and it sure save on polygons and man hours!! Again Chirone, thank you!!

Yes Dango, I started as a Trekie and just went from there. ;-)

sokol 15-04-2009 04:59 PM

I like this a lot. Nice work. Today I was in a hobby shop and I so one of those about 4 ft. A lot of details. Beautifull. Anyway. Good luck and keep up the good work.

oldhippie_tom 15-04-2009 06:53 PM

Thank you sokol, I really appreciate it! I suppose I choose it for that reason, and I found heaps of reference. It is fun doing this project and I see you have joined in also. I am sure you will have a neat idea as everyone is showing such different styles. Anxious to see you work!!

hmmm - using a displacement map makes him the man. modeling it would just be silly. :)

nice job so far hippie tom - but have you not thought about maybe funking it up a little? - maybe making your own version of the falcon, a sort of sister ship? just a thought. :)

oldhippie_tom 16-04-2009 06:21 PM

Arran, yes modeling it would have been maybe, a BIG MAYBE, alright if I had all of the time. But was very lucky to have that displacement map. Yes, have thought about scuffing it up and I have been working with dirtmaps lately and am hoping I learned enough.

I wish I could do such a thing, as be creative and coming up with an original idea for a ship. But not one of the things I have a talent for. I see the things you do like the wrestler and the guy pulling the box with the chain and just wonder what it would be like to have those talents. You are very good!!

Just hope that me modeling the original will be alright. As I surely am having alot of fun at it Arran.

Dango77 16-04-2009 06:27 PM

Fun is the name of the game Tom! If you don't have fun doing it there isn't much point is there!
I wish I knew about displacement maps, I have the general idea of what they do, but creating one and using it are things I will have to look into in the future.
I'm loving what you've done so far, your making one of the all time best ships in film look good!

Good afternoon, once again! Wanted to post an update on my project. Yesterday I started getting worried that one day it would be a week before the contest was over and I would still only have half a ship. So I have all if the structure of the ship in place now, and that eases my mind a little. But always seems I feel I need to hurry!!

Dango, and I hope not to start messing up, or getting lazy in places I shouldn't. Thanks for liking my project Dango!!

Hope everyone is doing good and having fun with their projects!!

oldhippie_tom 16-04-2009 07:30 PM

Dango, one of the best tools I believe I have is a plugin for Photoshop that is free from Nvidia. If you do a search in goggle for nvidia and normal map you will find it. It will make a normal map out of about anything. I would not be without it. But, with normal maps your computer will slow very fast as you start to use them. Use them very sparingly. If you need some guidance I will help!!!

tweetytunes 16-04-2009 07:35 PM

yep that the MF alright - looking spot on well done

Dango77 16-04-2009 07:49 PM

Thanks Tom, I'll do that at some point! I'll PM you if have any questions about it (if that's ok?) Thanks for the info!

honestdom 16-04-2009 08:53 PM

there is also a program called crazy bump which is very good/simple

tweetytunes 16-04-2009 09:39 PM

I love crazy bump - I`m lucky still got the beta and if you cancel the update you can still use it hehe.

But it sooooo worth the money.

oldhippie_tom 16-04-2009 11:16 PM

Thank you tweetytunes, and again congratulations or your nice project and win. Nice job indeed!!

I wanted to post an update of my project, and say sorry it has been so long. I have really (REALLY) dreaded, doing the steel plating on the saucer part. I did not have a clue when I started the project how I would do it. A couple of days of figuring it out and modeling it. Just glad it is over, because I was worried I wouldn't ever get it. Still need to do the back, but had alot of practice! ;-)

Need to do some things on the docking bays, finish the radar brackets, and do the plating on the cockpit (or bridge), and should be ready to start on the back of the ship. I do hope everyone is well and enjoying their projects!! Really some nice stuff being done!!

Dango77 21-04-2009 01:52 AM

Wow!
Looking very nice Tom, those plates must have taken forever to do! As you said you've had the practice at them now so hopefully the back ones shouldn't take so long.
If you get the time will you do a blast damage/dirt map for it?

I'm sure it'll look good whatever you decide anyway, I'll look forward to seeing it!

oldhippie_tom 21-04-2009 11:58 AM

Morning Dango! Well I am not going to model any damage to the ship, but I am hoping when I start texturing that it will look like it has been through alot. But that may be a wishful thinking. But plan on giving it a shot!!

I am glad you like the work I am doing! Thanks!!

Whyte 21-04-2009 10:33 PM

i'm impressed with what you've done so far. The ship is looking awesome! i think you're heading on the right lines with a warn and used look with your textures. It should look amazing when finished.
Keep up the good work.

oldhippie_tom 21-04-2009 11:41 PM

Thank you very much Whyte! I do appreciate it. It can be said that the Falcon was not the prettiest ship in the fleet by any means, or the best maintained. Hope I can keep that spirit with it.

Good evening! Again wanted top post an update and it has been too long. I have still been working on the metal plates, and just now finished. I have some tweaking to do as you can see. This area with the plating is 2/3 or more of the ship. I felt if I didn't spend some time here that the texturing would be of no avail. Not that I mean I had done that kind of job, but I wanted it to be as good as I can do. I can leave the tweaking for now as I have alot to do in the back and the clock is ticking. But I am having alot of fun with this!!!

Good evening!! Got quite a bit modeled on the back, but a lot to go. I really want to be done with the modeling by Friday, as that is that first. Had hoped to be done with it by then. I am making headway, and should be ok.

Dango77 28-04-2009 05:29 PM

Looking good Tom!
You are doing the Falcon proud, hope you manage to get the modeling done by your target date, and can't wait to see it all textured up!

oldhippie_tom 28-04-2009 06:10 PM

Thank you Dango. I am pleased you feel I am doing it justice and I am trying hard to keep it that way.

mtmckinley 29-04-2009 12:29 PM

As a Star Wars fan... I approve. :)

oldhippie_tom 29-04-2009 01:52 PM

Well, I do thank you very much. It surely means a lot to me that you liked it!

oldhippie_tom 02-05-2009 12:03 AM

Good evening once again! Well, here it is may 1st, and I had said I would be done with the modeling. But seems I may have to finish on Sunday. Got the rear of it all done and a good way done with the gun turret on top. And the radar still needs finishing up. So wanted to post as to what my plans are, and that I am trying to hurry. Anyway, 5pm here and time for a glass of wine!!

Jay 02-05-2009 11:00 AM

Being a fan of Star wars (huge) I approve of this too. You've done it justice for sure. Nothing to crit, just keep up the great work.

Jay

oldhippie_tom 02-05-2009 12:26 PM

Jay, that is very kind of you. It pleases me very much that you guys being Star Wars fans and think I am doing it justice. I am having so much fun with it! Thanks!!

Evening everyone! I did get the modeling finished up. Really had hoped it would have been on the 1st. I had liked the thought of doing the Falcon for two reasons. First to try and make something that at least resembled it, as that would quite a challenge for me. And also the texturing. I have been working with dirt and grunge mapping in my personal project and this seemed a good opportunity also as the Falcon has a lot of wear and tear. The picture I am posting is what I have as reference, and I certainly don't think I can do that, but seems a lot of fun to try. The odds are certainly better that I will look foolish! But I would like to give it a shot.

Hope everyone had a nice weekend!!

Good afternoon everyone! well 5pm here and time for a glass of wine. I have managed to get almost 50% of the UV's layout, and have applied a texture that I hope to use as a base and build on that. It is nice to see all of the work being done in this competition, and that so many are still working hard. Hope everyone is having fun!!!

Dango77 08-05-2009 04:35 PM

Really liking the look of the Falcon Tom, the beaten metal look of the panels is nice and the colour looks just like the original!
Keep it up, I know the end result will be worth the wait!

oldhippie_tom 08-05-2009 08:54 PM

Thank you Dango!! You have always been so kind about my work, and I appreciate it. The Grubs are certainly looking good, and your hard work shows!! We are still having fun, right? ;-)
