Oh hell to the yes!
Worst deadline ever as i am moving house mid Feb but i cannot resist! Ill get started soon :D

Jay 06-01-2010 09:49 AM

You'll be fine, you still have most of this month and a bit of Feb so....

Some Guy 06-01-2010 09:52 AM

Yeah hopefully
Do we need to use the base mesh you provided? Or is there a lower Polygon version? Im finding this one a bit too high.

Jay 06-01-2010 10:12 AM

Yeah that one please.

Its not too high thats easy to use

J

Jay 06-01-2010 10:14 AM

You can delete edges and stuff to use as you want, I supplied the head so people can get on straight away.

J

Some Guy 06-01-2010 10:17 AM

Am i allowed to make my own from scratch?

Jay 06-01-2010 10:21 AM

No mate, thats the point of me supplying the mesh out of the kindness of my heart , so you dont have to do it the long way, especially if the time is limited.

As I said you can do what you want to the mesh to make it work.

Jay

Some Guy 06-01-2010 10:23 AM

Okay sounds good! My idea was to create my Baby sister (hence why the adult male head you provided was prooving a teeny bit tricky) but ill be right ;)

Cheers!

Jay 06-01-2010 10:26 AM

Cool, dont forget to post refs of her for comparisons mate.

Decided to just make myself instead!
Here are the fruits of sitting there with a mirror for 30 minutes
Ill post up better refs when i take them.

Small bit of work, just doing the mouth and getting it all in proportion.
Is there a way to Overlay an image with transparency in ZBrush? so i can compare easier.
Its quite a challenge to be subjective with this, as i am making myself and need to resist the urge to 'pretty' myself up hehe.

Dango77 07-01-2010 01:55 AM

Not sure if it'll help at all, and it's not exactly the right way of doing it, but you could turn the photo of yourself into a stencil, then position it over the mesh to compare, then just switch the stencil off and on whenever you need it.
There's probably an easier way as you'd have to re scale it each time.
Just a thought though.

Some Guy 07-01-2010 02:00 AM

Ill give that a try :)
Gosh, a quick comparison in Photoshop shows that im way off with the positioning. Lotta work ahead!

Im actually starting to see a resemblance in this :D

THX1138 08-01-2010 02:00 AM

Fantastic work some guy! Also, is the base mesh Jay provided a z-brush mesh or a mudbox mesh?

stwert 08-01-2010 05:40 AM

.obj I believe, so should work with both.

Jay 08-01-2010 06:46 AM

SomeGuy

going good mate, Ive extended the finishing date to the middle of March, so everyone can get more time and really concentrate on the heads. Especially you if you are moving LOL

THX

its an obj mate so its useable in both sculpting software packages and any of the 3 big ones.

Jay

Some Guy 08-01-2010 09:27 AM

Thanks all!
Ive found out where the problems will be, mainly with the Nose and eyes. Making them "Na'vi-ish" (Like a Lion) Is throwing the proportions out so much it looks nothing like me BUT i think ive found a loophole!
In avatar, Sigourney Weavers character looked MUCH MORE human like than the rest, especially around the nose leading me to belive that she was a Prototype Avatar (more Human than Na'vi) SO!!!

My avatar is not fully Na'vi, rather a prototype that might look a teensy bit more Human than most (unless i find a solution to this problem)

Thanks for reading :S

Jay 08-01-2010 09:32 AM

Someguy

The reason that Siggy Weaver looks more like herself is because she has such a narrow nose in real life it was throwing the character way out when she was Avatared, so they made a decision to make it more like her.

This was what it was said in Cinefex or 3d world mag, I cant remember which one but thats what I read anyway.

Anyway we want proper avatar upper head and you as the lower half, No shortcuts LOL, the time has been extended on the challenge so everyone can stretch their creative and observation skills/muscles a bit more

I may enter myself but for fun only, I am judging it so I cant be included in the comp.

Jay

Some Guy 08-01-2010 09:34 AM

Haha so im looking too much into it! Hopefully i can get that happy balance between alien and actually looking like myself...

Still gotta get that pesky mouth right!

Jay 08-01-2010 12:09 PM

Mouth looks good, its certainly getting there, post a different angle or two.

Ears are a bit Batman 2000 though LOL.

Ask and Ye' Shall Receive!
Good point on the ears, and looking at this i think i have the chin/jaw a bit wrong. Im going for a kinda stylized look though cause i figure if i exaggerated the features itll actually make the likeness more recognizable.

Some Guy 08-01-2010 12:25 PM

Sorry for the massive image, just noticed.
Well atleast if im posting my Mug you can get a good view of it

Jay 08-01-2010 12:37 PM

Hmmm.

THX1138 08-01-2010 10:44 PM

Someguy, could you post a wire?

Jay, I knew it was a .obj file, but what application was the base mesh made from? Just curious thats all.

Also Sigourney Weavers avatar was my favorite one. Couldn't get enough of it.

To bad I cant enter this comp, as my maya is down with my desktop. All of you make me jealous. :headbang:

Jay 08-01-2010 10:46 PM

THX:

Maya mate why?? thats all I use, you should know that.

Jay

THX1138 08-01-2010 10:51 PM

Kept thinking it was a zbrush or mudbox mesh for some reason hence the .obj file.

Jay 08-01-2010 11:25 PM

I see, no I just provided it as an OBJ because people have so many versions of Maya and sometimes people ask 'how can I open this for this version etc', plus I thought if people want to sculpt instead then OBJ is perfect all round really...one size fits all so to speak

zbrush would be a .ztl file, not sure what a native mudbox file is, is it an .mb too??

J

stwert 08-01-2010 11:32 PM

No, it's .mud or .mdbx or something like that.

Jay 08-01-2010 11:34 PM

Ahh thanks Stwert

Some Guy 09-01-2010 09:52 AM

Sorry to hijack the thread but here's an update :P
Wireframe (thanks to Jay's Lovely base mesh) and just some adjustments again to the cheeks and mouth!

Too bad you cant enter THX, you could always do a Hand-Drawn version? I reckon you'd nail that!

No I apologise for hijacking your thread mate.

Now lets see the Avatar Nose get underway mate, so far so good.

J

tweetytunes 09-01-2010 07:41 PM

great start but (sorry) - I think your ears go up too much instead of back - yours are more elf like

mastone 09-01-2010 07:44 PM

Looks like a great start there.

Some tips:

Ears are to large and at the wrong position ( in Z in Y they are good)

If I look at your face it 's a long face and high cheekbones, on your model pull the geo down with the move brush( from below the nose).

I see you are already working on the details I wouldn't bother with it at this stage( trust me I speak from experience).

If I am looking correct at the avatar characters they have catlike ears/eyes and noses so that shouldbedone first then reshape it to match your characteristics so if you have big ears model a big avatar ear ( it resembles caricature drawing a bit).
So the most important part of the human anatomy is the overall shape of the head and the mouth.

Again looks like a great start, but there is still much to do on shape level so refrain from going into detailling level good luck

Thanks for the advice all! Ive toned down the ears and changed the face, its quite hard to get the big eyes AS well as the high cheekbones so i think its gonna have to be one or the other. I reckon most of the resemblance will be in the mouth (which is now totally messed up) but hey, still ages to go :D

Left is before, Middle is after.

Edit: Also with the nose Jay, I reckon that one is gonna be really hard! I tried a version (too embarrassing to show here) and it changed the top half of the fay WAaaayyyy to much for my liking, ill need to experiment much more.
