Open Challenge -Jerry Can Texturing

This is an open challenge to anyone who fancies it.

Texturing ctbrams model of a jerry can.

It can be any style you want, you can add to the model if you like, but the deadline is this weekend.

I've UV'd the model but they are not perfect. So feel free to change the layout combine maps or whatever.

Here is the file

try some lighting if you like or shall i do a version with a 3 point light setup?

honestdom 22-11-2010 04:08 PM

hmm, tried some different maps on this model and there seems to be some problems with the UVs and smoothing.

daverave 22-11-2010 05:22 PM

I will give it a try hammer...........dave

honestdom 22-11-2010 06:42 PM

had a go at fixing the problems. ran out of time.

* the only problem i was having was baking maps in mental ray the texture generated had some artifacts in it.

It should be fine for the purposes of the challenge. There is a new body for the jerry can which isn't really working either. It just has some extra geometry. Its not finished but both models are in the group.

honestdom 23-11-2010 01:54 PM

lunch break texture.

Little update

ctbram 25-11-2010 08:15 PM

I tweaked the geometry and laid out the UV's. Here is a render with basic color and bump....

I am sorry about the minor error in the geometry of the original model. I re-routed some geomtry then did not put the edges back in which I am sure caused the uv'ing problems in the original model.

I have cleaned everything up and refined the model. You can get all the project files on my drop box site.

Thanks ctbram
Sorry hammer for not replying sort of doing this on the hop, bit here bit there. Using this as a test for working in photoshop on filters. Yes hammer it is a little blury hope to fix...........dave

ctbram 25-11-2010 08:49 PM

How does the bump look?

I really wish I knew how to paint. How you get the darn paint and rust over metal look. It drives me mad because I can't paint anything I model!

daverave 25-11-2010 09:04 PM

Hi ctbram
I have downloaded it but not yet set it up, Im trying to to do this so any one can do it not sure if its any good?. If I could sit down for a few hours may be tomorrow will do a full make over on your newest one, the stuff I am doing does not need any good painting skills just get a slobge of paint in the right area, then putting filters on it............dave

Edit:just checked out your bump nice

ctbram 25-11-2010 09:55 PM

Thanks Dave I thought it came out nice. You don't want to know how long I spent researching the correct font for that.

Any painting tips you can share would be great daverave. I can find tons of modeling tuts but there is god aweful little on painting techniques to produce nice results.

I model, lay out the uv's, test them with a texture pattern, then open photoshop all excited and sit there starring at my monitor for hours not having a clue how to start.

daverave 25-11-2010 10:05 PM

Hi ctbram
I did this one to show how to make a brush, its not great but does show some usefull stuff, if you like what I am doing here I will do a little tutorial on it............dave

daverave 25-11-2010 11:37 PM

May I say that I do not like photoshop that much but its a means to a end, at the end of the day I want to create some thing that is as near to life as I can..............dave

daverave 26-11-2010 03:21 PM

I will have to do a tutorial for you then if you like this at the end......dave

bullet1968 26-11-2010 03:23 PM

wow mate yeh that would be cool if you could!

cheers bullet

ctbram 26-11-2010 04:13 PM

I would welcome any texture painting tutorials and praise anyone that made them.

You can find lots of modeling tutorials accompanied with poorly, if at all, lit grey scale and occlusion renders.

Only occasionally will you see well lit and textured renders by talented people, but like the Ring Lord, they do not share!

daverave 26-11-2010 04:31 PM

You are so right ctbram, I think I can only count two that I thought were any good. I am no expert but I am getting to grips with what I need in photoshop...............dave

Did a displacement filter and a layer style, will fix the lettering with a spec map.................dave

Started on the metal texture let me know if its ok........dave

ctbram 26-11-2010 08:51 PM

"Did a displacement filter..."

You used displacement for the letters and logo instead of bump?

Is that really needed?

daverave 26-11-2010 09:18 PM

No, a filter on the rust only, the letters look that way because I change from a lambert to a blinn what is why I said I will put a spec map on them...........dave

little update.........dave

I can see a seam?

ctbram 26-11-2010 10:07 PM

The only seam I can detect is across the front, but it's just impossible to attach the top in the uv layout without getting distortion and even then you can only attach it from one side. You would till have a seam across the front.

I am not a texture guy and have not worked in production so I am not sure what the proper solution is short of using a paint program to paint across the seams.

In the back the sharp edge is from the shadow of the handle, you may want to soften the shadows a bit.

daverave 26-11-2010 10:13 PM

Just match them as best you can there are aways going to be seams I think the filter knock the out of alignment, I would use maya but I do not think my graphics card is up to it.......dave

bullet1968 27-11-2010 12:02 AM

I had seams along the top and around the spout though I dont think you can notice them in mine....and around the back near the handles....you would have to match the UV's I think a little closer than they are is all.

cheers bullet

ctbram 27-11-2010 01:36 AM

Not suere what you meant there Dave about a filter knock being out of alignment.
