David 08-12-2010 01:51 PM

Dave :)

mtmckinley 08-12-2010 01:58 PM

Yeah, yeah, sure you did:nerd: He always nails these things and gets to laugh at me. I hate those artistic shots, they should be banned from real or render comps. I got 10 after some close consideration but you wait I'll get you next time Dave...

tweetytunes 08-12-2010 03:55 PM

10 out of 12 - got the vase and the orange grinder wrong

stwert 08-12-2010 04:58 PM

6... man I suck at that stuff. Although to be fair, theoretically all of them could be CG, so it's just a matter of guessing which ones happened to be real. Right?

***SPOILER****

...those that got an odd number correct, you know it's designed to be a half and half test, right? ;)

Nilla 08-12-2010 05:56 PM

haha stwert, I wouldn't be too upset about it. I did another one of these a few months ago and I think I got 2 out of 6 right. I think it just comes down to picking small flaws in a render that gives away that it's CG, when you have single objects it's a lot more difficult to do than when you have complete scenes because of the reflections. Matching lighting, reflections and shadows with backgrounds in a composite is usually what would give it away, while you see renders of coffee cups or wine glasses on a plain background where it's just impossible to tell coz they're done so well.

Mayaniac 08-12-2010 06:58 PM

*EDIT* *Some of what I say is a SPOILER!*

8 out of 12 first time round. Though some of the CG was really OBVIOUSLY CG. The camera and the old man in particular, plus the car was easy to pick out. But the rest was great. That woman looked SO CG to me for some reason.

Gen 08-12-2010 07:23 PM

11/12. The one with the key was soooo "iffy" for me lol.

Chirone 08-12-2010 08:23 PM

7 of 12, stwert i just had to be a rebel and get an odd numer

i know someone who got 1... and he's like gone to school and everything for 3D stuff... id be pretty embarrassed if i were him

bullet1968 08-12-2010 09:15 PM

I got 6...sucks...well it is 0514 in the morning LOL.

Yeh steve I thought the woman was CG...it didnt look right...bloody things. Good art work though....its scary how now things are so realistic its hard to tell real from fake.

cheers bullet

Dango77 08-12-2010 10:54 PM

I got 8, some of those were a right bugger!
I have to agree with Steve about the woman looking cg too, got me with that one! And the camera was probably the easiest to spot for me.
Was a good little test though, cheers for posting that one Dom.

marlonjohn 09-12-2010 03:14 AM

4/12 :giggle:

Rhetoric Camel 09-12-2010 03:27 AM

10/12 much better than I thought I got, I always second guess myself.

murtaza 09-12-2010 04:20 AM

Fade or Foto

I am too bad I get 5 out of 12!:help:

honestdom 09-12-2010 11:24 AM

Cool!

murambi 09-12-2010 04:43 PM

Is she? I thought "too perfect, gotta be CG". If so, that's cheating, PS is as much fake as other CG.

honestdom 09-12-2010 06:10 PM

a bit cheeky, but yeah a few of those images are touched up... the key!

Nilla 09-12-2010 06:49 PM

The thing I don't really get here is that when you have an image that's been heavily retouched isn't it then in essence more of a "CG render" than real? With something like that key (annoying key btw) that's an artistic photograph with artificial lighting and then retouching on top of that how can you then box it as real or render?

Still, cheers for posting the link these things are funny.

09-12-2010 09:27 PM

^ Agreed entirely.

The woman and key had me stumped. I got 8/12 of them though...

I like the old man or whatever though... The way his eyes are so caved in kinda gave it away for me, cause I personally, haven't seen anyone age that bad, not even my 90something year old great granny :P

Some Guy 10-12-2010 03:51 PM

6 correct. I guess the lines are being blurred for me. Also, am I the only person who thinks the old guy looks like he has no eyes?

Nilla 10-12-2010 09:37 PM

I just wanted to add a link to a thread I just posted because it relates to this fake or foto thing.

I thought long and hard about the pepper in the final shot for this, and how incredibly hard it would be to replicate fruit or veg like that. Then when I saw Alex Roman do it I just got so amazed...again.

Joey81 10-12-2010 09:45 PM

these broken fruits 're insane....

honestdom 10-12-2010 11:50 PM

i thought the peppers in that would be do-able in 3D. but the dust stuff on the surface is a detail that would be fairly over the top. so I guessed real because of that, not because of what the peppers looked like.

Nilla 11-12-2010 01:51 AM

It was something in the surface bumpiness on the green pepper that got me at first, but I think it comes down to how perfect the lighting is that makes it real. It usually is. But your right about the peppers it's redoable, and the dust on the surface makes it very real to me as well. I was working on a lot of shading networks when we started on the new site a few months ago and I just started to look at them in again in the past few days, trying to make something that would recreate the surface top would not be easy. Dave was just saying something on the high speed cameras and maybe it's a bit much but it's so difficult to fault anything in his lighting and rendering. I love it on the lemons and tomatoes and how things shatter. Makes you think about how dynamics are really important in this field as well, amazingly well done in his movie.

Jay 11-12-2010 04:01 PM

move over Dave I got 12 mate:nerd::mstickle::P, the key and the fork ones were the deciders for me so I left them until last

Jay

Nilla 11-12-2010 04:21 PM

Step aside for the big masters with the proper knowledge:) That's the two I got wrong which is of course why I consider them unfair. Think I'll move over to cartoon shading instead:)

Jay 11-12-2010 04:35 PM

Hey Nilla

yeah those two were hard. I looked at them all first before deciding. The one of the girls eye was a near miss too, it all looks quite cg, but the eyelashes were the giveaway on that, they were just way too good to be cg.

speak soon
Jay

Nilla 11-12-2010 05:05 PM

Yeah, I sat there for a good 20 min at least I did the same. The key I still don't get, what makes you see it was real? The fork made me feel a bit stupid I've replicated metals a lot and it was very real looking when I looked again. Very tempting to cheat and feel a bit smarter, like when you cheat on those online IQ tests:)

I played with retouching a bit when I got my tablet, I used my own pics and gave myself larger boobs and slimmer waist. I looked great btw:D:inlove: Retouched Dave as well, he barely spoke to me for two days:happy: But that image of the woman is retouched in areas, it is the eyelashes that gives it away as real you're so right.

Gen 11-12-2010 06:18 PM

Yeah seriously, whats up with that key? It ruined my perfect 12 :( lol. It had me squinting, tilting my head. The image is so heavily treated it had me thinking o.k then its probably real, on the other hand maybe they're just trying to fake me out.

stwert 11-12-2010 07:04 PM

I'll tell you why I got the key and fork right... key.. hmm, simple prop, nothing too complex, it would be one of the first I might pin as CG... ergo real.
And the fork has a black section on the left that looks cropped? Why would that be on a CG image? Doesn't make sense... ergo real.
Yeah, I know that's a pretty dumb thought process, which is why I got 6 :p

a bit of a sore loser then, huh? ;) (i'm kidding of course)

stwert, i was under the impression you just said all cg :P

stwert 11-12-2010 08:35 PM

Haha... I said they all "could" be CG, which I realize not to be the case, after some of the comments, but I also said that these things are usually designed to be half real, half cg, so I made sure to guess 6 of each.
