February Challenge - Speed Machine

Ladies n gents start your engine(s).......

This months challenge is called Speed Machine and its purely modelling.

The idea is to model a vehicle of your own design that is super fast and looks fast even when its stationary, you know like a Lamborghini or a Yamaha R1.

It can be of a past, present or futuristic design, even steam punkish. The sky is the limit on this one so use your imaginations and let loose just make it look cool and fast

Dont worry about texturing but if you can then great, and it doesnt need to be in a scene but again its up to you.

Some basic rules....

Model MUST be of your own design, but obviously if you need reference to make it more convincing then no probs go for it.

Show Works in progress.

Final images can be either a still image no bigger than 1024 or do a turntable with a link to vimeo or You Tube.

name your thread: February Challenge - Speed Machne - 'Your Name'

Final entries to be in by the end of February (ish)

if you do need some inspiration I suggest looking up Neville Page and Scott Robertson, Harald Belker and of course Daniel Simon, also check out dragsters and even pod racer designs, all cool stuff

good luck to all

Jay

THX1138 03-02-2011 10:39 PM

Does it have to be a car?

Jay 03-02-2011 10:46 PM

No mate

It can be anything, again- past, present, futuristic, steam punk

Also look at the things as inspiration at the end of my post, ya know Pod racers etc. As I said the skys the limit. no wheels on a Pod Racer LOL

Just make it fast and cool.....seriously though check out Daniel Simons work on his site:http://www.danielsimon.net/artdata/artworkselector.html frickin AWSOME!!!

It's nice to be missed Tweety, cheers!
Haven't done anything in months, so this'll be a nice reason to get something going.

shaimon 04-02-2011 04:09 PM

Hi. umm...
I'm asian person. sorry, poor my english.
I don't have any idea yet.
Would you mind if I join you in this challenge?

tweetytunes 04-02-2011 04:17 PM

the more the better - hoping this challenge brings loads of new faces and some older ones out of the woodwork

stwert 04-02-2011 05:51 PM

rgarcia, create a new thread in this section of the forum for your WIP like several others have already done. Good luck!

04-02-2011 06:36 PM

With it being of "our own design" would we be able to do a custom/concept version of a car?

Jay 04-02-2011 07:07 PM

Acid: As long as it is your design and doesnt resemble anything we know then fine, you can call it what ever you like, as long nobody makes a recognisable vehicle for example and sticks the odd new part on it, as thats not the idea, this is about using your imagination and free form modelling

hope that clears it up
Jay

04-02-2011 07:49 PM

Ah, gotcha. Gonna go with my other idea then, thanks man

Jay 04-02-2011 07:55 PM

Cool mate, look forward to seeing it

Jay

Jay 05-02-2011 11:15 AM

I will update the thread at some point over the weekend regarding the prize for the best vehicle at the end of the challenge

cheers
Jay

Jay 08-02-2011 07:43 AM

After looking at various concept art of vehicles on the web, the best ones always seem to be of the most simple design..........just something worth bearing in mind too for your designs.

Jay - this never happened - just wondering, don`t really care about the prize but would never say no if i won ;)

Also do we have a fixed end date yet as the end of the month is creeping towards us and no final deadline has been set.

7 March ....it willl buy me some time hahahah

Jay 20-02-2011 01:34 PM

tweety:

LOL, fibber - we always wanna know what the prize is and it is important so there! - sorry for the delay on that, I've been so busy with work it went over my head, so I'll contact Dave and Nilla on that after this post.

As for the deadline - you really kind of answered that in the fact that its the end of the month. So as its a monthly challenge the end of feb is the deadline. No acceptions this time round. January had an easier challenge with longer time, but it seemed like it went on forever.

Hopefully the next challenge will be announced on the final day as this one so everyone needs to be alert. Also if anyone has more thoughts on a challenge throw them into the correct thread and I'll have a look and mix it up a bit LOL

Mastone: no

Jay 20-02-2011 04:40 PM

Should find out about the Prize for the best model soon.

And Monday the 28th feb is the last day so get stuck in and finish those model details. I'll be announcing the next challenge on that day too.

I let you know that I have only ever got 1 prize (Mike`s wonderful 2nd book) The other two medals was my only prize and I love them just as much.

Not quite sure on what I would like next - A environment one would be cool - something like "build a set from a tv show/film".

A texturing challenge would also be welcome, but I know models would have to be surplied so prep for that would be needed.

THX1138 21-02-2011 10:35 PM

Yeah, an environmental challenge would be great. We haven't had one of those in a long time. Not since Mike was running the challenges.

Jay 21-02-2011 11:49 PM

Okay well I'll see, this one is only my 3rd so.........

Perhaps an environment challenge.......

Jay:

Just a quick question, can my final image have 4 different angles in it?
I may not get time to re-render it before the end date so would like to enter a previous render if that happens. If you'd prefer a single shot then I'll happily pick one though.
Cheers mate.

tweetytunes 27-02-2011 02:06 AM

How long does yours take to render then ??? - but its a good question to get it straight in everybody's head what they need to get in.

I have a single image at the mo and a turn animation rendering away as I speak - but a multi angled image may pay off more, than a single shot. (a little bit what happened to my spaceship entry).

LOL, I'm not going to be at home until Monday night is the reason....

Jay 27-02-2011 10:28 AM

Hey Dango

sure mate I dont mind, I guess you want to show the model off - fine mate

Jay

bullet1968 27-02-2011 10:43 AM

Jay does that mean 28th GMT at end of day?? I dont think I will have time to do the bloody racing harness...but if this is the case I have nearly 2 days? as I am in front time wise I assume a GMT?

cheers bullet

mastone 27-02-2011 11:43 AM

Ah the smell of stress in the air , the desperate questions to skim an hour or 2 extra.... you gotta love deadlines....... LOL

And Dango I would post 1 image with a nice angle which shows of the speed 4 static images won't convey the speed part ;)

bullet1968 27-02-2011 12:00 PM

LOL no stress really mastone...I have no stress unless its work...if I dont get it done...ahhh well LOL. he he he he I just want to make sure I get one above last...LOL. I have just been notified I have a gazillion things to do tomorrow at work...which all involves CAD work so I might not finish...bugger work.

cheers bullet

Dango77 27-02-2011 12:19 PM

Cool, cheers Jay.
I wanted to do the multi angle image as I'm not sure I'll get to do my rendered turntable before the finals are due, and that way at least you can see the overall model. Hope I do get to do the turntable though, would be good!

Jay 27-02-2011 12:22 PM

Hey Bullet

yeah Im aware we are all over the world in different time zones so you are fine mate. As long as you are done by the end of most of the mondays LOL, our American brethren are behind my time so ya know. Im certainly not getting up at 'stupid o'clock' to view or judge peoples work....we gotta have some life

this a friendly challenge so I dont want you guys stressing, its not the end of days LOL

Dango

no probs matey, do what ya gotta do but again dont stress it.

good luck

Jay

I'll be announcing the next challenge on my monday night anyway so keep an eye out.

sorry a quick edit: Bullet the finer details arent really a worry to me, its what is like on the outside really that will be of an appeal to most, a racing harness doesnt really do it for me speedwise LOL
